Prius 2010 Oil Change Interval Revised? Not yet... (closed)

Not surprising. I am sure it is much cheaper to have it blended and packaged here than in the Pacific rim and transport it to the USA.

To me this is nonsense...

The "rumor" of 10K mile oil changes was started by YOUR dealers, not anyone on this forum. Some of your dealers got information from YOU and some didn't...
This is a typical case of starting something and then backpedaling fast. Scared of litigation? what? why?
You are losing all credibility as far as I am concerned...

 

I'll take that POS Prius off your hands for $5k cash so you wont have to worry about Toyota's credibility anymore.

I know this is about the OCI for the ICE, but what about the OCI for the ECVT? Synthetic also? Longer OCI with synthetic?

 

Good question, I think Bob W. has a thread where he posted a PSD oil analysis from his GEN3 and a link to some information about Gen1 PSD. I plan on changing mine at 10K or 15K, the dealer has Toyota ATF-WS for about $8 a quart, I think it holds 3.5 quarts. I don't know how hard it will be to change because I haven't had the front bottom covers off yet.

So has the interval change been officially confirmed since the rumor? I've had the Toyota sales guys deny it when I bought mine, and they tried to sell us the prepaid maintenance assuming 5k intervals in their pricing. Which should be less, now.

Sorry for the late reply!

That price included the oil. It should have been a higher price (given the fact they used the Toyota-branded 0W-20 oil), but the service tech said the dealership had not yet established the price for the synthetic oil change for a Prius. I was surprised that I was the second 2010 to come in for an oil change (though I'd have been the first), and the dealership had not yet figuerd out what charge would be appropriate.

 

I just changed my oil, second time, after 7,500 miles. The oil was fine and I originally placed in 4 quarts total of 0x20 Mobil 1 with an original toyota filter. Nearly 4 quarts came out.

This oil is synthetic oil, and this oil is forumulated to go beyond the 5,000 mile oil change interval.

Another issue, I have a 2003 Jetta Wagon TDI (Diesel turbo charged) 5 speed manual, and I use Mobil 1 synthetic oil, Delvac 5 X 40 weight, and change with the proper oil filter every 10,000 miles as recommended by VW. I have over 127,000 miles on my Jetta it does not use any appreciable amount of oil and I still get 50+ MPG on ultra low sulfer diesel.

Toyota does not get it. Being green is not changing your oil every 5,000 miles with high quality synthetic oil.

It appears the other car manfactures get it.

Then dont change your oil every 5k. If anybody asks, just tell them you did. If the oil is that great, nobody will ever know the difference.

 

... and if Toyota asks you to prove you followed the required maintenance (every 5k) to honor the warranty, how will you do it? :doh:

JUST FYI - proof can be a simple log you fill out and keep (no need even for receipts).

I used to fill out my log book as well as keeping the receipts, now I only fill out the log. With all the receipts it just felt unorganized and cluttered and I noticed the ink was disappearing on all the receipts anyway.

 

Unless the engine comes in with obvious signs of "not changing the oil", like caked with a half inch of black peanut brittle inside, I've never even heard of it being a issue.

I'm opting for a high quality synthetic and go the max recommended mileage which varies based on what you get.... Amsoil is good to 25K, another for 35K..... so figure out what your comfort zone is.

I will prob work my way up at 5K increments checking the oil each time.

Many already go to one year "or even two" and 15K and higher with good results.

I just had an oil change yesterday at 2500m, mostly to get the factory oil out and prepare for two 8 hour driving periods to South Florida. I may get another one at 5000m but then I may go on a once per year schedule. My 2000 Mercedes uses synthetic (Mobile 1) every 15K-17K miles, just turned 135,000 miles and no oil is used between service. I think Toyota will change their recommendation to at least every 10K miles although it should be 15K or more.:rockon:

 

I sure hope they do too but from their point of view, why should they? What benefit would it be to them (they are in the business to make money)? How many potential Prius buyers did not buy the car because it has 5K syn OCIs? Very few I suspect. I didn't even know my car took syntheic when I bought it.
Anyway, I know I am beating the dead horse but I really got a feeling we are not going to hear from Toyota about a change on the 2010 but likely something on future models.

Well, first of all I think the "Greenies" will get them if they don't change the interval. Secondly, even though we like to beat up on the Toyota store and the "head shed", I don't think they are sitting out there thinking about ways they can screw their customers to make more money. Ask GM for one, what happens if you continuely ignor car buyer's wants or complaints.

 

Well, Toyota doesn't make any money on more frequent oil changes. Their dealerships might, but they don't. So it really doesn't give them any advantage to keep it lower, even if it doesn't really give them an advantage to raise it up either.
