Prime destined to be doa?

    For my driving conditions, I consider the EPA stated range and fuel economy to be a worst case scenario.

    I have this rule of thirds for determining what range you needs. It probably originated in the BEV conversion circles for determining the required amount of batteries for a project.

    You want a third to get where you want to go with the BEV, a third to get home, and a third for reserve, to use for unexpected side trips, range loss due to weather, and buffer against regular deep discharging and eventual capacity loss.

    Fuelly is great for getting the bell curve for ice vehicles. Tesla has this data on all midel s owners, but I'm guessing reluctant to publish. EV trip planner takes many of these factors into account, I'm not sure if the Tesla trip planner is as comprehensive. But then how do you turn this into a windshield rating? Maybe you state best case and then give 5 or 6 degradation factors?

    On the windshield sticker you put "Range can vary based on driving behavior and environment. See Model S | Tesla Motors [insert appropriate manufacturers website] for details."

    Know your audience.

    People don't read the fine print on the window stickers. It already points out that results vary based on driving conditions.

    What would get them look at more information?

    A major contributor to the problem is they don't understand the factors at play, so providing additional data won't accomplish anything.

    I assume by "they" you mean salespeople AND customers. Salespeople usually only understand what their customers want and customers' eyes glaze over if the salesperson tries to tell them extra information the customer wasn't looking for in the first place. Which is why it might still be a tough sale for the upcoming Ioniq EV. My WAG is it will be in the same price range as a mid-sized Camry or Accord. Explain to anybody other than an EV enthusiast what range means on an EV and you HAVE to plug it in when they just passed 12 gas stations on the way to the dealer. Most likely all the "normal" customer will see is rather large deficiencies.

    .... that must necessarily mean you're basing your knowledge on the difference between the 2 vehicle's prices .... and what was that price that Toyota said the prime will be ? I think i must have missed it somehow ....

    too luscious. but seriously, prime has everything but the hatch space and 5th seat. this isn't the prime vs model 3 thread, which is more about phev vs bev than anything else.

    early reports show a similar range hit as with an ICE. Typically knock off 30% if you presume a max trailer limit .

    I wonder if the lawyers will allow a car to have ludicrous speed. Didn't Tesla get some push back for offering insane mode? Hopefully Elon offers it. The background of the touchscreen should then go to plaid when activated.

    As far as I know, the Model 3 is likely to get all of performance options available on the S and X.

    most model 3 buyers are hoping for a $35,000. car, not a lot of options.

    And they'll get one that is RWD, has 200+ mile range, can make use of the Supercharger network for a fee, and likely has all the standard features people have come to expect on a new car. Even for a fee, Supercharger network access is a plus over the Bolt, that might be slightly more.

    If they thought the $35,000 would get them lifetime Supercharger access, AWD, increased performance, and upscale interior and paint, they were deluding themselves. Tesla has said from the beginning of this model's development that it would compete in the BMW 3 series segment. BMW doesn't hide the fact that their $33k model can go above $60k. Tesla wasn't promising a Cruze or Corolla with the Model 3.

    hopefully, but the question is when. gm could be on their second iteration by that time, and there might be other 200 mile bev's.

    True - but if for example, gm hadn't rushed the gen1 Volt to market, simply to beat the Leaf & PiP, gm could have developed a more efficient plugin hybrid system in the 1st place - and put in it, the 5 seats that they've just now getting around to doing. I'm not saying they're EV will be cobbled together, but on the other hand, the spark ain't no model 3, if you know what I mean.
