Prime destined to be doa?

    Wasn't that back in December 2013? They didn't have plug-ins back then and I thought that was what I was asking about. Or is there some leak that they're going to do it again on the plugins - even after being hit with nearly $400 million in fines.
    Presuming the Koreans learned their lesson from puffing up their mpg's, my question remains. What am I missing.
    As to bad automotive manufacturing behavior - if I had my choice between not quite going as far per gallon vs unintended acceleration that was continually denied even though the manufacturer had knowledge otherwise, I think I'd take the former, as my downside.

    127hp in EV mode (Prime) vs 60hp (Ioniq), 1.8L Atkinson on eCVT (Prime) vs 1.6L on a 6-speed auto tranny (Ioniq). iPhone ? Sorry but I don't remember the Plug-in Prius having any unintended accelerations issues and the $755M fine was levied by U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan in 2015.

    You can't have it both ways .... either bitch about earlier non plugin korean mpg claims ... and acknowledge non plugin Toyota Prius unintended acceleration, or that thare have been NO false Korean plugin mpg claims, and no more unintended acceleration with the newer Prius.

    And Toyota paid over $1.2 billion in fines for the unintended acceleration issue.

    Hyundai was hit hard over the MPG ratings as an example to the rest. The misstated figures may have been an unintentional mistake. Part of the reason for the new EPA rules for 2016 we were all discussing not too long ago is to clarify them in order to prevent such mistakes.

    As to what is missing, the Ioniq is a smaller car. Being larger means more weight for the Prime to shed to maintain gen4 numbers. The Ioniq will likely blend at a lower speed than the Prime. I don't think we can say for sure how the Ioniq PHEV's battery will impact the rear seat and cargo area. But both cars aren't officially available yet in the US, so we have to take any published ratings with a grain of salt until they are.

    This is when things get messy.... an article with mistakes gets picked up and passed around, spreading incorrect information. Unfortunately, we've seen that become a source of greenwashing.

    In this case, the 127hp is actually the combined (electric & gas) power. Just the electric exclusively is actually 91hp.

    That still puts Prime well ahead of Ioniq. But for some perspective, the current Prius PHV delivers 51hp.

    If that's true then it is a Gen 1 Prius Plug-in killer for sure. Just how much smaller is it? Has to be heavier than my Prius Plug-in.

    some people would rather have the best? sonata isn't a comparable, and ionique just isn't. at least not yet.

    The Prius never had "unintended acceleration" issues. It has always shut off the accelerator pedal when the brake pedal is depressed. Certain -other- Toyota models, not so much. Now they all have that feature. What actually happened to Prius drivers is they pressed hard on the accelerator pedal thinking it was the brake pedal. This was proven. Ditto for the Audi fiasco of years ago. Poor pedal placement was deemed the cause.

    i still don't buy it. when the lawyers went away, so did the sua. too coincidental imo.

    if the cali dealer hadn't given the chip a lexus with too many floor mats, there probably never would have been a thing known as sua. except for audi.

    There have been comments about the Ioniq having a smaller rear seat, but no official numbers yet. Best I can find is that is between the Elantra and Sonata in size. So the exterior dimensions are likely close to that of the gen4.

    No curb weight number out either. So no comparing electric side power to weight ratios either at this time. Keep in mind that the Ioniq's motor is in place before the dual clutch transmission. That means the extra gear ratios could close the power gap in driving performance.
    And Hyundai's issue with misstated MPG values didn't affect all their models.

    From civil cases in which Toyota settled out of court on, poor software engineering in the brake controls may have also played a part.
    Well, Toyota did take steps to fix the issues, and after the issue came to an end with the fine and settlements, any SUA's due to hitting the wrong pedal were no longer news worthy. It still happens, but also in other models and brands. It's like the Tesla fires, and gasoline car fires.

    There were complaints about SUA in other countries that were reported to those transportation safety agencies. Under US law Toyota was required to report that to NHSTA. Whether there was anything actually to them or not doesn't matter. Toyota chose to not do so, and tried hide that there were. That is what the big fine was for, and not the actual SUA events.

    Actually all I was referring to when this started was the money from that Hyundai settlement went through the NYS legislators (finally) and is what is funding the NYS EV tax credit for this year (if it passes and gets signed). The $755 M is what was left after a few state attorney generals got their cut. I thought it was ironic and couldn't resist when @hill said what am I missing...

    decaf anyone? :whistle:

    I never did believe people could have difficulty pushing the correct stop/go pedal, and then one day Mom did this in the Camry while backing up. There was a 95 gallon blue recycle bin that took the brunt of the impact, but the wall of the house still took damage.
