Think I will call a Toyota dealer and see what kind of answer I get from them.

Trans is covered by 5/60K powertrain warranty, sometimes 10/150K for CARB warranty in CARB states.

You're right, I shouldn't have said "for the life of the car", but for the warranty period duration.

And not doing the trans fluid change might shorten the life of your car it sounds like?

Yes. But, transmission life on average is probably over 200k miles without a change. OTOH, there have been some tranmission failures reported here at lower mileage and as far as I know none of them were in transmissions that had regular oil changes.

It's a case of how long you plan to keep the car and how lucky you feel.

People who have done thir first change and had an oil analysis at 30k miles have usually found oil that has thinned below the viscosity spec. I can't get too excited about that because Toyota probably considered that during transmission design and oil choice.

A bigger problem is that the GenIII has no filter and contaminants build up in the oil. Things typically look bad at 30k miles, after that initial change 60k miles seems acceptable. That's because the transmission sheds more material while it is getting worn in. I expect to change mine at 10k miles, 30k then 60k intervals if the 30k looks good enough.
