POLL: Do couples share cars?

Rufaro - I am with "DH" on this one, sort of. I have two Pri's and a 7 Series BMW. It is a rare trip of 75 miles or more that either Pri leaves the driveway. I am for comfort, not to mention safety, on a long highway trip. The Pri's are nice around town cars but are not highway cars. Before anyone complains, please don't tell me you would take the prius on a long trip if money was absolutely no concern. That is right, a big BMW is more comfortable than a prius. BUT a prius is a great car to use around town, that is why we bought a second one.

Now the issue for your leg is another one to consider, but how important is it that you drive? When we go on trips unless they are over 10 hours one way I do all the driving.

 

I'm teaching my wife to drive at the moment.... She'll be getting the 98 Outback and never touching the Prius.

 

My wife and I bought two cars within a month of each other (the prius and a Honda CRv) Even though we havent officially claimed ownership (I havent peed on the tires YET), my commute is the longest so I get to drive the Prius the most.

If she goes on long trips, she takes the Prius. Which means I have to remember how to drive the CRv!

I'm religated to all MX and cleaning of the cars, but I dont mind, it's easy and fun and she does the majority of other community tasks.

Incidentally...after one year the Prius is at 21K and the CRv just barely passed its 10K mark!

Well, honestly, it didn't USED to be so important to me...but my boredom levels have soared, not to mention how much dh kvetches about traffic when he IS driving...drives me nuts, never mind to the destination. Bottom line is...I am NOT as comfortable in ANY passenger seat as I am in MY driver's seat...and with dh's car(s) I don't get the choice. The arrival of the Pri was the DEFINITE tipping point...my earlier car was not as comfy for ANY of us for longer trips. (And before that, I still always had the option of driving some of the time.)

 

4 cars.
- Wife usually drives minivan
- I usually drive Prius on work commute
- Wife will drive Prius instead of minivan whenever possible (she seems to like it better)
- Kids like the new Prius, so they often request it
- On longer trips with kids & luggage, we take minivan of course, on shorter trips we can take the family in the Prius
- Old CR-V is the beater/Home Depot-mobile, gets driven occasionally
- If both of us are in a car, I am always in the driver's seat
- Only I drive the sports car!!

I've owned several over the years, but don't have one currently.The one car I love more than a Prius.

From your description it sounds like some of the tines on the clutch diaphram spring have lost their temper. This is especially
true for original Triumph parts. There is very little play between clutch-engaged and clutch-disengaged, yes? If true, the clutch
is not "tight", the clutch diaphram spring is worn out. Should be replaced.

Now if Toyota could drop an HSD system under a Spitfire styled body, I'd be a happy camper B)

I am NOT showing this post to DH! I have not TRIED to drive the Spitfire for about 11 years, and have no intentions of ever doing so again. HE is happy with it as it is. For now.

We have a very similar situation. I drive my blue 2006 Prius and she drives her blue 2006 Prius. Hers has the carseat hooked up, so I sometimes drive her Prius when I have to transport the baby, and she sometimes drives my Prius when she's going somewhere without the baby. We take turns driving her Prius for family trips.

 

Two cars, one the '06 Prius and the other a 2001 Honda Accord Coupe. The Prius is "officially" mine, since the mini-van we sold to buy the Prius was "mine". We always refer to the Honda as "hers". She drives it once in a while, but since I told her that her car was probably getting near equivalent mpg for short trips (i.e., grocery store), she usually just takes hers. Family trips are obviously in the Prius, and I drive 100% of the time (which is how we both prefer it). I believe the only times she's ever driven me anywhere has been home from a few surgeries.
I've always maintained the vehicles. That includes mainly tire pressure, oil and other fluid level checks and changes/refills, tune-ups, and the occasional replacement of leaky/burst hoses that I can get to and feel competent replacing.
Same with our motorcycles; his and hers, I make sure they're road-worthy before each ride.
Just so you won't think she's incapable of handling mechanical issues, my wife pre-flighted her plane each time she flew it.

Tom and I each have our own car also and each car is a hybrid. He usually "gets" the Prius as he commutes and I am "at home". I usually drive the Ford Escape unless I am going further than he is then, of course, I get the Prius ( the newer and my favorite). Marie

 

My wife and I share a single '05 Prius, with her being the primary driver. Our schedules make it fairly easy to coordinate use of the car, but most days I opt to commute to work via bicycle instead (approximately 10 miles each way). If the weather doesn't permit this, which is rather uncommon as rain (even when quite heavy) and lightning don't typically bother me, she'll drop me off at work and collect me afterward.

I generally take care of any necessary maintenance/repair, since she's more comfortable with that arrangement. It's a fair trade!
