The first one is the only one who's got the steering wheel on the right side. No wonder the rest of them are having back trouble!

I find my Gen II Prius with cloth seats very comfortable. A couple of times when I've hurt my back, it's been the only place I've been comfortable: the sofa, the office and even the bed were horrible, but the car seat was lovely.

But by far the best seats I've ever had were in a Saab. I hear Volvos have remarkably good seats if you have a bad back too.

You'll get nowhere on seat replacement with Toyota. They don't even begin to 'go there' due to liability, but they might suggest an upholstery type shop.

I think it's Motorwerke or something like that who's a Recaro dealer in Berkeley.

Can you go to your health care provider or physical therapist to have a look at you in the car and advise??

Yes, that's the place- I've been talking to Stefan at Motorwerke. Seems like a very professional shop.

Have you heard about the all new Accord Hybrid? 47 MPG epa rating combined and just like the other Accords. It's a very nice car overall, and beats Prius in just about every category except for cargo space and couple of MPGs.

Keep in mind the TSX is an outgoing model, so it would be an 'old' new car.

Have you considered the CT200h? It's about the size of the ILX but with the flexibility of a hatchback and folding seats. It is tight in the rear if you regularly carry 3 or 4 passengers. It has better handling and better seats than the Prius.

Rumour has it that the TSX and TL will be replaced by a single TLX model.

There's always the diesel hybrid plug-in V60. They sell it in Europe I think, but not in Australia. Do they sell them in America?

Volvo V60 plug-in electric hybrid wagon

It's a reasonably big wagon with those nice comfortable Volvo seats. But it'll give you 120mpg, and do 0-60 in less than 7 seconds. And it's four-wheel drive.

Maybe the Gen II Prius seats were designed for short fat men.

Good to know about the TSX. Did not know it was outgoing. I have been interested in the Accord Hybrid and the Lexus CT 200h. Would have to buy used, as new is too expensive.

Are you sure you've followed all the steps in the link below? This is one of the better articles I've seen:

How to Adjust Seating to the Proper Position While Driving

Since Toyota has sold a million or so of these '3rd generation' Prius' worldwide, they won't respond to a claim of steering wheel offset as I'm sure it falls within acceptable industry limits. I've seen other models offset much worse than this Prius, but yes, I have observed the right side of steering wheel is slightly closer than the left (i.e. the column points slightly to the left of centerline of the seat, IMO)

Accord Hybrid pretty much cannot be found new and no used ones for sure. CT200h is pretty expensive even used. Maybe you'll need to go back to something used that you knows works ??

keep trying to make adjustments if you can, but trading in may be your only option. on the other hand, if you were to attempt a private sale, i'm sure someone would love to have a brand new car for a thousand off or so. it's still a big hit, but if the 'off center steering wheel is making you that crazy, you should probably dump it. i'm pretty sure you're on ly one of two people that have noticed it in a million or so cars.

Maybe one of three, bisco.;) The steering wheel offset is pretty apparent, and exists on many cars. Few car models offer a dead centered steering wheel with absolutely no slant in relation to seat axis. Lisa Jean's fitment problem is pretty significant and other than changing cars, will be fairly impossible for Toyota to fix without re-engineering the Prius interior.

Finding a car with Prius Liftback's fuel efficiency numbers will mean trying out the Prius c. I seriously doubt that a c has a dead center steering wheel and perfect seat/wheel alignment, but worth a try?

The Lexus CT200h has a masterfully designed interior but at an equally masterfully designed Lexus price that's a little north of $32,000 before any options are added. Otherwise, it manages a non stellar (when compared directly to Prius) EPA figures, 43/40/42 corresponding to city/hwy/combined MPG. The interior has been noted as a little tight by more than one reviewer, but I found it pretty comfortable. Exterior looks wise, it's gotten a little better in 2014, but far from a favorite of mine.

You can approach and in some cases beat CT200h EPA highway numbers with a slightly less expensive diesel car like a Chevy Cruze. The CT200h is derived from the trusty Toyota Matrix mold which was in turn derived from the even more trusty and long lived Toyota Corolla. The 1.8L engine in the Corolla/Matrix (and its twin Pontiac Vibe, built on the same line with the Matrix) is the foundation for that nice 1.8L power unit we find in our Prius Gen III Liftback and the aforementioned CT200h, with those magic hybrid specific modifications breathed into it.

I have narrowed down my lumbar cushion option to getting a piece of half inch memory foam and cutting it to 8 inches tall by 16 inches wide and using that. I have been using a 1 inch thick pillow about the same size but it's a bit too much arch for me. Experimenting with a folded towel to find a half-inch is 'just right' for me.

I was referred to Bob's Foam Factory in Fremont. (thanks cycle drum). I hope to find a half inch foam of the proper proper density they can cut to size. I am 6'1", 180 pounds. For me where I need lumbar support the seat curves back away from my back. :(

Have you tried experimenting with Thinner pads for lumbar support? I too went crazy 'shopping ' for pads that were less thick to no avail. Now that I figured out that half-inch thick is the magic number for me, I think I will have luck getting a pad made.

Hardy har har, ho ho ho.....

btw, having my 84 y/o mother sit in my car .... first words out of her mouth were .... the steering wheel goes to the left. That is true, not making it up. :p

Mmmmmm, there have been some valid criticisms of CT200h interior, one big one being the center console in front of the shifter is pretty darn wide for that size of car. Last time i sat in CT, I noted it and quickly realized I don't like it so much. then again, I'm 6'2" tall, too tall for that car.

Go down two sentences farther from the bold accentuation you added in my soliloquy... you'll see mention that the CT200h interior has been reviewed as tight by some. I read one that said it was nearly claustrophobic. That was a little over the top, but then again, the writer could have been 7 foot plus. Can happen!

BOB'S FOAM FACTORY (in Fremont, CA) IS THE TICKET FOR LUMBAR SUPPORT PAD material! !

I went in and spoke to Bob asking for a dense foam 1/2" thk x 9" tall x 16" wide. He showed me several types/ densities in 1/2". Two were very similar on density (pretty firm): neoprene and cross 'something'. He said the neoprene was a little more expensive but would hold up longer. When he priced the two materials in my size for $10 and $3.50 respectively, I laughed to myself and said I'll take the neoprene for $10 bucks Bob! ;)

Though I was not able to have the Prius with me today for this I did take a few pieces toTNT Bronco to see how they felt. Having spent $60 buying and returning other lumbar supports I was happy to pay $10 and even if I come back and decide on a different foam or thickness it is a cheap experiment! This place is the bomb!! I was in and out in 10 minutes!

HUGE Thank you to cycledrum for suggesting this place!

Go drive one. 44/44 mpg city/hwy. Not quite a Prius at the pumps, but may fit you better. No sun roof.

Had same issue when I purchased mine. Dealer said that within 30 days he could switch me to a Prius with the power seats which should work. If you are within the 30 days (had something to do with Toyotya financial) ask about making the swap to a Prius with power seats.

Had the same issue with the seats. My dealer told me that if I had told him I wanted to change models to the one with the power seats, he could have done it as long as it was within 30 days. I went through Toyota financial and it seemed like it that allowed him the flexibility.

Sounds like you are within the 30 days and your dealer sounds very poor on customer service.

Try another Toyota dealer and tell him you want to trade up to a Prius 4 with the power seats.

The Prius manual seats are a nightmare. Will not buy another Prius unless it has the power seats. We'll see what the does to Prius competitive pricing as Toyota bundles the powers seats with about $5K in options.
