All-new Toyota Prius Plug-in hybrid

Officially Premiered in Europe now. No real new information except Toyota Europe estimated EV range of 69 km (43 miles). This is NOT WLTP. Also estimating 8 km (5 miles) of EV range per day with the solar roof.

120 kW (161 hp) MG2

I was hoping to find out info on the gas tank size but got a bunch more pictures in colors we won’t be getting.

Well, it very likely is, as I don't see Toyota running NEDC tests that can't be used, nor using Japan results for Europe. They just aren't officially sanctioned yet. From past releases, this number is likely lower than what the official one will be.

 

I would add that the model presented in Europe today is the PHEV and does not have the red accents on the seats nor on the dashboard.

 

Yeah you are correct I should have stuck "official" before WLTP because not everyone understands what pending final homologation means. Bestcarweb started putting in estimates as well but they were estimating JC08 and being a little optimistic even for WLTC conversion. 56 miles (90 km), maybe @bisco could do that. Although the battery is 25% smaller than the RAV4 Prime, it is lighter than the old Prius Prime which is 925 lbs (420 kg) lighter than the RAV4 Prime, more aerodynamic and arguably newer more efficient power electronics, I'm hoping it beats the RAV4 Prime 42 mile AER.

I noticed that the slow pan shots of the official Toyota USA walk around shows just a J1772 connector and no DC fast charge at around 0:09 and later when going over the interior a 120v/1500w plug at 3:48.

 

Similarly the slow pan of the charge ports in the regular Prius shows no 120v plug at 5:45

 

Would have been surprising for the US to get fast DC charging.

 

Good question. My wife's 2017 doesn't have one. She had two flat tires, not at the same time. But the tires couldn't be repaired. Fortunately (or not), the car was in our driveway so AAA came and towed her to get it fixed both times, but it was an inconvenience not being able to just replace the tire with a donut until it was convenient. I vowed I would never buy a car without a spare. So this is an important question

I agree. I think having no spare is stupid (flat tires happen), and donuts are dangerous. I want a full size tire.

My car before the Prius was a van. It had a donut, and I told the salesman that for me to buy the car, they needed to put a full size tire in there. At first, he told me a regular tire wouldn't fit. I suggested that the car is made for other countries as well, and that a regular spare ought to fit. It did, of course.

Does any other country have donuts? I think the move away from real spare tires, and now the elimination of donuts (now they give you a can of spray goo), is to reduce weight "for better mpg" they tell us (I can't imagine it makes much difference), and to reduce the cost of the car for manufactures.

Is driving with a tire filled with spray goo a safer alternative than driving on a donut? Maybe, because it might be that having no spare is better than a donut? I bet we've all seen foolish drivers on the highway going 70mph with a donut instead of a tire. I can only imagine the loss of control in a curve or braking in an emergency. Is there any data on accidents caused by driving on a donut?

 

I’m ok with a compact spare, aka temporary spare. That second expression sums it up: use it to get yourself to your destination (if possible), and if needed, to a tire repair place.

 

Wasn't a spare tire option mentioned elsewhere? Perhaps for one of the other markets.

 

There was a press photo I can't remember where I saw it but they showed a spare under the trunk. It could have been the Euro or Japanese version.

 

i've been living with a spare in the hatch for ten years, they've got me brainwashed.

at least the new prime has the flat deck. in the gen 4, the spare would have taken up the whole hatch
