I've been bouncing between the windshield/foot setting and the dedicated defrost button. I suspect that latter is better, but there haven't been enough days well below freezing to get a good sampling of both yet.

Thanks John, I'll try both settings again but I'll set it before I turn off.

  4. Agreed, right into your face, or around the car and back to the front again, but nothing at the windshield vents. Para 1. Optimal population control? Boy, I hope not, we already have too many people in the world. I don't mean we should increase the CO, and clean air should always be the goal, But for the most part, we buy Prii basically for mpg. And to have to run the engine just to see is not good for the mpg or clean air. I will admit that if you can put up with cooler temps, you may ordinarily get by with the front vents, pointing rearward. But on some days that will not work, with high humidity, maybe very close to the dew point. In colder temps the air is generally drier, ( one good point, anyway ) see how lucky you are in Minn. Back to my point, I don't understand how Toyota could have missed such a obvious engineering.

  5. The defrost button works very well!..................at turning the engine on, too.

about the only thing i like about chrysler products is that you can vent the air in any direction, select outside or inside at any time and choose a/c on or off, heat on or off.

I find that if I set the heat to 65 and to defrost and fan speed on one or two, yes the engine goes thru warm up but then it shuts off and I have EV, only turns on about every 7-8 minutes, runs for about 1-2 minutes shuts off and I am in EV again. Continues that way and I am getting between 115-145 mpg depends on how cold it is on my 15.5 mile commute. I thinks that is pretty good. :)

John, you are the man! Thanks!

It was -9C today and I had the HVAC set to blow out the defroster and floor vents, temp of LO, fan on one bar, and I was able to drive in EV mode as much as I wanted. The key was I had the HVAC settings set the last time I shut the car off.

I must note though that my car sits in my +5C heated garage prior to driving outside. But the car did sit outside for almost an hour and the car had no problem staying in pure EV mode.

So you are correct that you cannot adjust the HVAC away from those settings once the car is on without triggering ICE, that 10 second delay is meaningless. You must set it before you turn the car off on the prior trip (or I suppose you could start, adjust the settings, turn the car off, then back on).

So... I guess I should mention that temp feels a little chilly on the legs but hey it works, the windshield stayed clear today (I used the rear defroster no problem) and I will continue to test this every day. Boy the seat heater works so well.

You can bet this new LO-LO-Def/Flr setting will be my new permanent HVAC setting in the winter time, unless the family is in the car or I have a longer trip LOL

I got my PIP six weeks ago and just installed four studded snow tires Saturday, as I had heard the Prius is horrible in snow. Today we got about four inches and I was fine on the highway and about town. My previous four vehicles were a 2WD Tacoma and three Camrys...all of em got studded snows in winter.
