Plug In Hybrid not charging- port issue? Forgive the newb...

    Well I took it to a chargepoint and whaddaya know, it charges. Just fine. So if anyone needs a charging port for a 12-15 Plug in hybrid I got one I'll sell you for $50, free shipping. Going to put it on Ebay for $75 and it will STILL be cheaper than most everyone else on there. ;)

    Meanwhile, I apparently need to test my charging cable. I'm using the standard one that came with the car, and yes, to answer your question, the rubber gasket has been removed. It clicks in but it does nothing- no light, no charge. Anyone have suggestions on the standard 110v charger? Anything that goes wrong a lot that I could repair? I have NO issue taking it apart (I did just replace my port after all) so if there's something in there that goes bad a lot I will happily tear in there and get at it.

    And I def do not want to pay $300 or more on Ebay for a new cable.

    If it doesn’t light it could be a fuse but normally it’s more complex,
    Have you tried it in many outlets?
    Have you tested the outlet in question.
    worse Toyo EVSEs are potted and a pain to fully disassemble if the box is garbage.

    unless you know how to troubleshoot you’ve got yourself and expensive extension cord and the box is garbage good for only parts

    I would recommend contacting Ms Dream and buying a $99 replacement EVSE from DUOSIDA

    Outlet works great. I plan to plug it into another outlet or two once the snow is gone. But since the brick lights up I assume there is something wrong in the plug. Perhaps a meter check is in order today.

    @CrunchyMusic, did you test that trigger switch or look for broken wires that go to & from it? It's really light duty and I can imagine that it's a weak spot in the device.

    Might a bad/bent signal pin, my Voltec EVSE had a bad crimp a little solder fixed it.

    does the handle and pins all look clean and in good shape?

    Handle (“charger” / EVSE) side

    The EVSE tends to be the thing that breaks

    Sometimes the contractor won’t close

    Sometimes the switch is inop

    Sometimes an internal fuse is blown

    Sometimes the cable gets squished

    Sometimes the pins in the handle break or burn or are improperly crimped

    Can even have a bad logic board or coorsion

    Simply tons of possible failure modes

    At the end of the day it appears your EVSE or car can’t detect one another

    The handle on your EVSE has screws in it. You need to take them out to open it and check that switch. I had pictures, but must have deleted them. Not a big deal; you just take out the screws and open it up. The switch is right there.

    Be careful when you reassemble it that you don't pinch the wires. And of course, make sure the other end is not plugged in. ;)

    One fly in the ointment I just noticed, The OEM cable uses some kind of special 5-point screw rather than the torx screws on my L2 cable.

    Just tested the cord on my friend's Chevy Volt and nothin.
    So... I am getting a 5 sided wacky "torx" style driver bit and I'm cracking it open to see if the switch is bad or what. Gonna try to check all these things. If I can't figure it out I'll order a new head on ebay for 50 bucks and replace it.

    Currently bidding on a unit around $100- we shall see.

    It really doesn't look that bad- Nothing looks amiss in here. Switch seems to be working. Perhaps it is the plug itself- I think I remember reading that the grips inside wear out over time.

    Could detect no power with a meter so I ran a tester over it while plugged into the car and there's no power going past the block. Even when plugged into the car. Is there a relay or something that "shakes hands" with the car when it is plugged in? If so that ain't happening. I have no clue how to repair the block- can only reset it. Any suggestions? Meanwhile off to Ebay to find another one.

    I recommend getting a pinout

    the 2 small pins send “signals”

    if the car or EVSE doesn’t see/send ground on the one small pin
    No handshake and no signal

    if the car or EVSE don’t handshake or can’t see one another the pilot signal Likely won’t occur.

    Testing tHat the ground pin at the handle is present and actually connected to ground and that the signal pins have continuity from the pin to the board inside the EVSE is a basic first step when nothing is sensing or signaling

    There is communication between the car and the EVSE block before the block feeds power to the car's charger.
