How did I know you'd bring up the liars on the other side? I don't watch Fox News either.

Heh heh, sorry for the assault Jerry. We got our second Moderna shots yesterday (a perk of being old codgers) maybe that brought out my testiness. I any event. I enjoy your posts and apologize for the bluster.

This was your older plug in prius, not the prime, right? So the answer is simple. The "driving miles" is an estimate based on your past driving style. When you disconnect the battery it erases the memory that holds the last 5 days of driving history. Then it uses defaults that assume that you are a very conservative driver, using about 200kWh per mile.

Thanks. I forgive you. I'm sure I've done a lot worse. I like your posts, too. Didn't mean to be nasty, but I get so tired of the lies in the media that I kind of lost it there. They are destroying our unity.

Our second dose kind of clobbered me, but only for about 6-12 hours. I shivered so hard that night with sweat pants, flannel shirt, & three blankets that I thought I was gonna break my back. But by noon that next day I was fine. Go figure.

Back on topic, there's a thread somewhere here where someone was saying that there was a way in the Prime to bring back the actual range. I don't have time to try to find it now, but he was pretty adamant that it works. I haven't had a chance to try it and would need to find it again to refresh my memory. It had to do with plugging in the EVSE with the car ready and turning off the car with it plugged in and then doing that three days in a row. Or something like that.

If the answer is so simple why do I get and extra 2 or so miles of actual driving distance every time I disconnect the ground wire? I have a set course that is from my house to Walmart. Its 10 miles. On a full charge I can drive to Walmart and when I leave I can get up to the highway and go a block or two before the engine comes on. This is when full charge indicates 10.8 miles. I disconnect the ground and reconnect it and it charges to 13.7 miles. Do the same route and I get about 2 miles further. It takes about a month to drop down on distance so I been doing it about every month or so. This has been going on for this winter. I am now going to sell it because I got a prime advanced.

@Desertdeals69 comments are very interesting. It makes me want to try this out and see for myself.

When I wrote the original reply, I was using your profile and that said you have a 2017 prime. I later saw that you had a PIP at the time. Sorry.

Many parts of the car are adjusted as a system. This is true of the Prime as well as the PIP you had before. When you charge the HV battery, for instance, it can measure how much energy is pumped into the battery before it reaches full. It can then use that data to determine your state of charge. Once you disconnect the 12V battery that data is lost and has to be re-learned. In the mean time, it assumes a brand new unused battery and displays state of charge based on that assumption.

@dbstoo I'm glad you posted that description of how the PiP's charge algorithm(s) reset to a predefined standard that is displayed as the EV Estimated Range and in @Desertdeals69 case allowed the car to get actual miles that reflected that change in the Estimate after the reset procedure.

I was thinking about trying to post a similar suggestion to yours, but decided against it due to my thinking it might be more confusing than helpful along with the possibility and/or possibly having to argue with others here who might not agree or want proof of the actual algorithms binary structure decoded and laid out for their inspection.
Homey don't play that! Oh well Homey tries not to play that way anyways......

In short, I too also believe that is what the OP @Desertdeals69 saw after removing the neg. cable from the 12 volt in the car.

Another reason I didn't post was that when I first read a post, either the OP's or another PiP post here I went and dug out my 14 PiP new car window sticker and checked in the EPA ratings area at the bottom of the EPA box it says in fine print "All Electric Range = 6" 11 miles is in bold print is under the Driving Range Bar which gives the combined and gas only ranges and just to the right of the fine print all electric range, which was way to confusing for me to use as any sane example of what @Desertdeals69 was experiencing.

Thanks for taking the lead with your post, as I am pretty sure that is what was/ is happening, even if I didn't want to post it myself.

Assuming that you are speaking of the Prius Prime, just let the BMS (Battery Management System) determine the charge. Some suggest that you charge it immediately before use. I THINK that is based on the characteristic of some batteries to charge to a specified voltage that then drops a little in the first hours after charging.

For my use, I charge as soon as I pull into the driveway and let it charge to whatever level it deems necessary.

My understanding is to do with temperature - if you come home after a drive the battery will be warm, and immediately charging it in this state will only make it hotter which can contribute to degradation of the battery. The best thing to do is let it cool down first before charging, and setting the timer with an "off" time is the easiest way to do this if you have a regular commute (or cheaper off-peak electricity).
