In the other thread, he said he got it but it has no charge. So we'll have to wait until tomorrow for data with a full charge. It will start with lower EV ratio for sure.
Charged my battery early Saturday morning, but didn't use it until Monday morning. EV indicator was down from typical 11.9 or so to 10.3 miles. So it lost about 15% for the two days. Not sure if that's typical yet. Figure the rate must decline by that point or you'd be out of battery in a week or so. That said, EV range dropped only to 9.0 after going some 2.2 miles to the freeway this morning. So got and extra 0.9 miles out of the stated range...
I plugged it in last night, then headed out to the DMV first thing this morning. There's lots of new goodies to explore, not to mention the drive experience itself. I blew it though, accidiently firing up the engine messing with the climate-control settings. Oh well. You quickly discover PHV isn't about EV purity anyway. It seeks out efficiency opportunities, taking advantage of the engine at times. Watching the HUD, it was interesting to see the difference between a full charge and the HV only I had last night. The electric power is indeed there. I enjoyed climbing the steep neighborhood hill from a dead stop at the bottom to sustaining 40 mph the way up. all with only electricity. When I finally finished running around town and headed out to work, the Prius was going 61 mph up the ramp in EV before the engine started up. So, then was a good time to switch over to HV mode. The morning's 13.3-mile charge had already depleted to 6.2 miles. To my surprise though, the value almost immediately started to climb from the engine split. I drove 9 miles at 70 mph and another 3 or crossing the river at 55 mph, watching the EV creap higher as I went. It was at 7.2 miles when I swapped back over to EV. Upon reaching my parking spot, there was 3.6 miles of EV left with 22.7 total miles of travel and an average showing 78 MPG. That's pretty satisfying with a car not broken in yet and the day was cold & rainy. .
I came home from work a little bit ago. I didn't take note of the numbers when I got home but again the engine came on while going across the bridge. When I was about 1.5 miles from my house I ran out of EV range. Now here's the one annoying thing that happened to me. When I did run out of EV range and the engine came on I was in an area with constant stop lights every block. So when I stopped at the first light the engine was running since I had JUST run out of EV range before that. I sat there with that running engine bothering me lol. I know its got to run through the warm up but after going something like 15.5 to 16 miles of blended EV having the engine finally run is not a sound you want to hear. Still, for me this is the car I have been waiting for. I had to go a different route home since I needed to make a stop at my dealer but had I gone my normal route I think I would have made it to and from work without having to recharge at work and still only have the engine start on the bridge.
I find that if I have the PiP in EV/Eco when the EV battery dies, as long as I'm going under 23 mph at the time, it'll run in EV off the main hybrid battery... I now try to time it so I run out of EV just as I get to my office, and then use the Hybrid battery in EV to move through the parking lots to the charging station. Get about another 0.5 miles for free.
I totally agree... Very cool!!! It's hilly where I live, can't wait to try it out! Excellent!! Already answering my questions!! Thanks again and enjoy!!
Hey, nice vid andi1111! I see that unlike the US, you're not awash in a sea of over-sized, seldom loaded pickup trucks and boated SUVs. Very nice looking area where you live!
hi andy, are you driving a new pip or the pre production? how many miles and what speed and temp? looks pretty flat? how much battery did you use? thanks for the video!
I believe he was in the 2010 demonstration car, not the pre-production nor the production, but please correct me if wrong Andi.
Awesome stuff! Good to hear some impressive feedback. Sound like PHV has turned out to be what I hoped and speculated. The power split charge during HV hyw. travel is exciting. THe best of Prius, Pre-Production PHV, and more!
Hi! It was a preproduction PiP, which heated the interior with heat-pump. That's why there's no engine noise. It's 11.5 kilometers one way and it's pretty flat. It was 0°C outside. When starting in the morning, the display showed 21km EV left, when I reached work, it showed 9km left. Local speeds are at 50km/h, out of town is 70-100km/h. Now, that I've returned the car, I'm back driving my Vectrix. It was a fun week, but EU will be getting PiP in 2nd half of 2012. Preproduction PiP had/has some cons: - the plug is not L shaped. It's straight and about 10 cm (4 inches) long. Because of that, I couldn't close my electric box doors in our undergoround garage, where I charge my Vectrix. Without the extension cord, I couldn't have charged on public stations as well, because it activates only when the plug doors are closed. Luckily, it was in front of our hotel, so I could leave the expensive charging cord (230V, 12A) laying there. I wouldn't leave it there otherwise. (see the attached pics). I hope, production EU PiP has the L shaped plug. If not, I'll give an electrician to cut the existing one and mount an L one. My dealer told me he'd also fixed it when/if I get the PiP. - reverse beep. Also told b the dealer, that they'd disable it. - speedometer or should I say - lying speedometer. When traveling at 100km/h by my very accurate Samsung Galaxy Note GPS/Glonass unit, the PiP speedometer was showing 108km/h. However, the distance traveled was equal in the car as on the GPS. Here are some pics. Note the fuel consumption on our way to the coast. Highway almost all the time, CC at 108km/h (100km/h by GPS). Fully loaded family of 3 with all the stuff for the 16 months old baby girl. Also note the useless plug.
Andi, that's a demonstration Plug-in Prius, or at least that's how it is referred to here (some also called it a test mule). The pre-production units wore the 2012 production models new front grill, had the charging port in the rear etc and were first shown to us in September 2011 in SF at the unveiling. The battery pack in the one in your pics is also different than the pack found in the pre-production/production units for 2012.
Thank you for clearing that out! I didn't know there were more than one version before the production PiP. I'm somewhat disappointed by the EV range. I'd require 25km of EV range without having to recharge at work. My company just set up a PV power station on the roof of our building, but the man in charge is hesitant to set up a few plugs (230V 16A, Schuko plug) and I'm not going to beg. We already own a Citroen Xsara Picasso family car, so I'm considering a Citroen C-Zero (rebadged iMiev) as well. But it's so tiny. If at least we would have gotten the US version of iMiEV, which is larger. We'll see. PiP isn't sold in EU yet and prices and models are still unknown. And because there are no carpool lanes over here, plug-in version may not justify the extra cost if it costs a lot over a regular Prius.
