regarding my trip lengths, it's 15 miles a day commute, so all ev. i'm running 50/50 ev/hv. i'm a homebody so i don't drive much outside of work. run to the store once in a while, take my father to lunch once a week, (60 miles round trip). when my wife and i go out, we usually take her hycam and i have a pickup for my remodeling work and trips to the recycling center when it's to much for the pip. so i do about 6000 miles a year on the pip, 2000 on the pickup and we do about 12,000 a year on the hycam.
i had to fill up today because i was driving to my son's (30 mi.) to pick him up to play golf. she took 8.6 gallons to the first click. my ratio was 48% ev (549 mi.) 52% hv (584 mi.) and 100 kwh on the screen. i don't have a killowatt so i figure 10% loss = 110 kwh. i was hoping to make it to 2 months from picking up the car april 20 for my first fillup, but missed it by 2 days.
It didn't say -49 when I entered it. I guess the formula I used got messed up when someone sorted the data. To fix it I replaced my formulas with raw numbers.
I looked at the numbers for the 16 people reporting kWh and it appears they are doing better than the Toyota sticker (EPA?) estimates for cost. Code: 16 real world PIP recorded 120.73 gallons and 1323.2 kWh 11,660 miles total @$0.12/kWh & $3.70/gal --> PIP Cost $605 (saved $257 over 50mpg) ($743 over 32mpg) @$0.12/kWh & $5.00/gal --> PIP Cost $762 (saved $404 over 50mpg) @$0.30/kWh & $5.00/gal --> PIP Cost $1001 (saved $165 over 50mpg) @$0.30/kWh & $3.70/gal --> PIP Cost $844 (saved $19 over 50mpg) @$0.20/kWh & $3.20/gal --> PIP Cost $651 (saved $95 over 50mpg) Above results scaled to 15,000 miles is annual cost of $778 versus Toyota sticker claim for 15,000 miles is $1000
joe, forgive my ignorance, but i don't follow, how do you come to this conclusion? btw, i don't have a meter, my kwh are just 15% more than what the car reports used.
In the OP is a spreadsheet. 16 people with PIP are reporting their gas and kWh used. Assuming they are correct and not reported optimistically by the car, that would be the average of 16 cars going 11,660 miles (most people have about 1000 miles so far). Maybe they are better prius drivers seeing as they are PriusChat members, but the average annual cost for 15k is 20% less than the EPA sticker estimated. (the average MPGe is over 95.. and probably they are using mostly EV mode)
oh ya, the epa is unrealistic. most careful drivers will do much better. 6 miles electric? you'd have to floor it to do that poorly. epa is a joke. every car i've owned has either done much better or a little worse than epa estimates. maybe it's just how and where i drive. it's not hard to get 12-15 miles all electric. so when i see someone getting 10 or less, i know they are doing something wrong, or their particular situation just isn't conducive to electric driving.
I have been schooled in another thread on that. The EPA testbench makes the ICE kick on at 6 miles. As would going over 62mph, so the EPA thing is meaningless as it only uses 0.02gallons of gas in their EV range which they mislabel as 6 miles electric, 11 (or 13 or 15) miles electric + gas. On the other hand, the prius display lies quite a bit as to MPG always in it's favor.. so there is that.
mpg onpip is meaningless except to compare to another pip. you can't use mpg on any alternative fuel car. the only method i can come up with is figuring kwh and miles driven electric and gallons and mile driven hv. when i did that after my first tank, i got 68mpg hv which made sense since i was getting 60-65 in my 08. then, if you want to get down to the nitty gritty, figure your cost per kwh and cost per galon, convert to average cost per mile driven and that's about the best you can do in my mind.
All, In reviewing the Spreadsheet I noticed that some entries for Fillup Gallons in column D do not match the EV Display Gal. in column I, to the closest gal. I would think that they should be close. Crewdog, your 4/24/12 Gallons=8.561, but EV Gal=22 ??? netsirkdmb, your 4/25/12 Gallons=8.108, but EV Gal=18 ??? netsirkdmb, your 6/2/12 Gallons=8.380, but EV Gal=10.9 ??? Where these correct entries?
I remember Crewdog entered his lifetime values at the time he input those numbers. It worked out for some of the calculations, but not for others (like HV MPG). Some of the other ones look like they just got transcribed from neighboring cells.. maybe someone's sticking mouse button or something?
just posted my second tank. a little disappointing compared to my first, but i think it reflects more real life driving. trips a bit longer so more hv and less ev. for some reason, i was down to one bar, with more gas in the tank. perhaps last time it had started blinking, i can't remember. hv was up 1 mpg, no complaints about that!
i have no idea how anyone is getting tripple digit mpg im in my first week with a prius pip, first prius ever, and im getting about an avg of 60mpg at 31mph these are numbers the epa report the reg prius should be getting =\
May be that your driving habits are not conducive to the PiP. Short frequent trips that allow for charging allow for higher mileage.
The trip to triple digit MPG is not to use gas but to use EV power instead. Or use what John1701a calles EV-boost and for at least a while you should get close to triple digits (or well over it at least at 31mph) for at least a while. What is your commute like? how many mles of EV before you cut over to HV?
