I will definitely cut you some slack there. But, as many PC members have found out, upon revising their needs, they did not need a truck. I would not hesitate to say, " There are many people in this category " Are there any trucks that get 50 mpg?
Not yet, but, they will be coming.

 

When I purchased my plug in, I was able to get over 150 mpg average due to driving around town. Now, even though I use the ICE for heating minimally, the average is down to 48. None of the driving habits have changed. I could not be more disappointed. If anyone is interested in joining a class action lawsuit against Toyota, let me know. I already have an attorney prepared to represent me.

How far is your commute? Have you tried the electric heated seats?

 

According to the Toyota website:
"In hybrid mode, Prius Plug-in earns a remarkable EPA-estimated combined mileage rating of 50 mpg"
When the ICE is running for heat- you're in hybrid mode, so you're within only 4% short of the quoted 50 mpg from Toyota.

 

I wouldn't take him seriously until he can provide more details. We want to make sure he actually own a PiP.

As others have said, the second you are using the ICE, it becomes a regular Prius. There are so many reasons why your car won't be as efficient during the winter (this site does a great job explaining those reasons from an ICE perspective), but you also need to account for battery performance being affected by cold temps (this is not a car thing).

Toyota's website also has an FAQ specifically for the Prius Plug-in and clearly states that range can be affected by cold temps:

If your lawyer is willing to take this case, then you either have a crappy lawyer ripping you off, or a dumb one which doesn't understand technology. All IMHO of course (don't want to get sued).

 

I AM AT 8.5 MILES PER PLUG IN. Does this seem a little low to anyone else? Purchased the car Aug 2012. I live in long beach, ca at sea level and commute the same way every day- I work 3 miles from my home.

 

How fast are you going? Any hills? Traffic lights/stop signs? What about temperatures? That range is what I experienced during the winter in Central NY. There are so many variables, it's difficult to tell you what you range you are supposed to be getting.

I Live in southern california- we are in a drought. Some traffic lights and a few stop signs- flat city driving for the miost part. - A hill that goes downhill one way and uphill the other. But 8.5?

 

Mine says ~17 miles when the charge is full (Orange County). But I work 45 miles from where I live, so I mainly use a blended drive approach and have not tried seeing how far it actually gets on EV only.

 

8.5 is a little low, but not so much that i would bother tying you up and waterboarding the details out of you.

Is 8.5 the estimate, and if so, have you tracked how far you actually travel on a single charge? I have found that if I don't do any freeway/hybrid driving, my EV estimated range gradually drops from driving solely on EV. My estimated range after some freeway driving has been around 13-13.5 with the generally mild weather we have been having.
You can reset the estimate by disconnecting the negative battery cable and see if it goes up to around 13. Bear in mind that the estimate is based on the kind of driving you are doing. YMMV.

 

In that case, it does sound a little low, as 70F is the sweet spot for batteries in EVs.

I'd check tire pressure, and as rogerv asked, do an actual run and see what the actual mileage is. Feel free to record the trip with your phone (point at the dash, but still keep the road a little visible), and I'm sure some of us here will check it out.

 

disconnect the 12v for a minute. that will reset you to 13.3 and you're good to go.
