Re: Petition to remove allow use of NAV & BT during move

I really am totally amazed at all these "Old Lady" type posts reeking of fear, litigious lack of common sense remarks and general "Big Brother" attitude. The opening screen on the Prius, the "I agree" screen" says it all. Once you push "I agree", Toyota is theoretically off the hook. Anyone can sue about almost anything, that's the society in which we live. Let's have some common sense folks. If you don't feel comfortable while inputting something onto your NAV at 60 MPH, don't do it. If you'd rather move out of 65mph traffic, find a place to stop, make the changes to the NAV, worry aobut getting back on the highway only to have to stop again to make another change later, be my guest. I do not want to do that. If enough people write Toyota and ask to have the motion control taken off, I'm reasonably certain Toyota will consider it. I do not know how to start an internet petition. I'd be happy to do it if someone would tell me how.

i had asked toyota regional hq about that...under no circumstances will they allow any input on the mfd while in motion...they are too afraid of lawsuits and lawyers...we had inquired initially to have it possible for the passenger to input addresses, data, etc...they flat out said NO...

Seriously, if they can have lawyers making the owner's manual (seeing how there are soo many stupid warnings in there), then they can also put in the statement saying under no circumstance is Toyota liable for any misuse of the MFD including inputing addresses or talking on the phone. So idiots can't spoil it for the rest of us.

What you say makes sense--until you consider the poor guy who gets rear-ended by the idiot typing in an address to his Nav system. Some people will attempt _anything_ while driving. I'm happy that Toyota decided not to lead its customers into temptation.

Didn't see anyone else answer this.

While moving, your Bluetooth phone options are limited but you can answer calls all you want. Making calls requires they be programmed into the buttons on the MFD, and you have to remember which button calls whom because the anti-use logic makes the label go away while moving.

Or so I'm told, since I have yet to leave Verizon for a more Bluetooth-friendly provider like Cingular. I sure hope I don't regret the move later...

I'm far from an old lady...and I could care less whether Toyota gets sued or not.

What I do care about is someone that feels they can comfortably take their eyes off the road to type in an address while doing 75+ on the Florida turnpike and just happens to hit someone else.

Of course, you could make your same argument about drinking and driving now couldn't you? I'm sure there are people out there that feel comfortable doing it.

You're right there are plenty of other distractions available in a car...cell phones, etc. This doesn't make any of it "okay" or safe.

I've regretted ever since I left Verizon to AT&T which is now :guns: Cingular. The phone is always dropping it signal. It's worse now too with Cingular as it still drops but their customer service based in India really sucks. AT&T had promised a new phone after one year. With Cingular I have to pay $18.95 to switch to Cingular from AT&T and lose about 600 anytime minutes for the same price. Plus they stopped giving me a discount of 10% that AT&T gave me from a corporate deal with the company I work for. All of that I could deal with if the phone would just work.

Not so, you can assign one touch dialing and that screen is useable during movement, labels are visible. I have six that I use often - works great.

The Garmin Nav system gives a warning but they allows you to use the system in motion. My iQue is much smaller and hard to use than the MFD and at least the MFD is more heads up. The Verizon phone is much more dangerous than dialing on the MFD. I think that Toyota is being overly cautious. I tried out the emergency medical function on the way to the hospital when I first got the car. It directed me to a Family Doc's office that takes walk-ins. It was not even a urgent care center and was closed at the time. The area hospitals were not even an option. If I had been in a strange area and need to get quickly to a hospital I would have been in trouble. A Family Doc's office is not an emergency room. I think Toyota needs to better.

If the buttons worked while moving, I'd be using them. As it is I use the buttons too much while driving. If you want them always active, there are solutions, I'll probably buy one myself. I don't feel like an "old lady" saying I understand Toyota's reasoning. Disclaimers, I Agree Screens, even signed liability release forms - do not absolve a person or corporation of liability.

I think what I"m saying is this is a non-issue for me. There are much bigger issues in life (hell, bigger issues about this car) for me to be excited about. My rights aren't being violated in the least.

I've only been in a Prius once while the phone was in use (I don't own a bluetooth compatible phone yet) and IIRC it worked while moving. That's the main reason for it, so you don't have to be distracted trying to make (or receive a call).

We have a 2004 Prius Package #6 and a 2003 Toyota MAtrix XRS in the household. I was able to add the factory nav to my matrix (a GM Delco model for the 2003-2004 Matrx/Vibe). When the nav come from the factory wired into the car, a speed sensor wire is attached. Since I added mine later, there is no such wire. My passenger can change destination info at whim. The only features that don't work are the maintanence menu items....but I know when to change the oil anyway. The Nav systems operate very similar, but my Matrix uses a joystick instead of a touch screen. I find it odd that the use entirely different DVD formats. I assume it would be possible to disconnect the speed sensor switch to be able to change destination info while moving eh?

Yes, but there are some drawbacks. If you disable the NAV speed sensor too long, it will cough up an error as the GPS side of things tells it that you actually did continue to move.

Disabling speed at MFD for bluetooth will cause the avg MPG not to work, and the wheel animation in the energy screen.

I think this needs some clarification. During movement, the screen is visible but the actual phone numbers are not; the numbers are "greyed-out" during movement. Thus, you have to know which phone number you assigned to which position in order for one-touch to be "useable" while the car is moving.

If you can't remember, for example, whether you assigned your office number to position #1, #2, #11, or wherever, you're pretty much screwed because the phone numbers are invisible while moving. Of course, it almost goes without saying that you need to be able to associate phone numbers with persons/entities......there's no label whatsoever for one-touch, only the phone number appears (unlike the phonebook).

I am not sure how you are using one touch but I have names and phone numbers in my phonebook. When I attach them to a one touch button the the NAME and the number is attached. When the car is in motion the number is blanked but the name stays on so it is easy to pick the right one touch button when moving. No problem at all!

My Garmin aftermarket GPS allows you to disable what they call the "safety" function. You have to read a warning before you can disable it.

    Once.

From then on it works for you every time you turn it on.

    Toyota is just being stupid.

I will agree that making me Agree to the warning every time I start the NAV system after starting the car is obnoxious. Toyota could do without that quite easily.

I know Coastal is making something that will automatically click the I Agree button...but what happens when they move that button a little...or change the text in a later release of the DVD? At best it stops working...at worst it goes into a loop that locks up the NAV system until you disconnect the thing.
