As always, there is more than one objective. One objective is for the U.S. be independent for our energy needs. (Somewhat parochial, but arguably a fair objective to increase overall world security.) Another is, using just one of the more pragmatic ways to state it, to retain our ability to feed a hungry planet by not screwing up agriculture with global warming.

Coal achieves one objective, but horribly exacerbates the other. Coal is almost entirely carbon (with some nasty sulfur thrown in for good measure), and a fair bit is burned for energy to create the liquid hydrocarbon fuel, which itself is then burned.

To give up on the possibility of solutions that meet both objectives by immediately starting to dig up and burn megatons of coal and dumping the CO2 into the atmosphere, is rather defeatist and short-sighted. Whatever happened to the famous U.S. we-can-solve-any-problem attitude?

Many solutions are possible, including solar, nuclear, and maybe coal with CO2 sequestration. (My bets are not on the latter, but that's a different discussion.)
