I found my own answer, if I'm translating step 10-13, the bulbs are in the plastic lens trim itself. No wonder I couldn't see where they go from the back of the trunk alone. It seems different versions have the light hole plugged.

In step 13 you see the little sticker I mentioned that was behind the plastic boot with the yellow tape on it.

I'm using an online translator so if someone speaks Japanese and can chime in, feel free.

Otherwise it looks like to accomplish this on an LE/SE, you will need a new centre lens piece, 2 bulbs and a harness. Basically not cheap.

Apparently not. If someone wants to try on their North American SE, I'd be curious to know. I do think Hammersmith mentioned there's different part numbers.

It also looks like it could be popped out and maybe be able to add the LED. Reflectors might be different and I think they are. I'm afraid of breaking the plastic trim on mine checking as it seems pretty brittle.

It seems to be a cable so you can extend the brake light onto the lightbar. It doesn't make any sense to me based off the other blog I found but the installation instructions for it aren't listed. I figured I'd put it here in case someone feels like trying or is more comfortable in Japanese.

I am not sure which trim is what in Japan but this listing seem to say it's not compatible with X grade nor PHV unfortunately. If I recall from Hammersmith, X grade was some fleet grade that's not available in North America.

Amazon jp also had a harness you could install to lock your car while the engine is on which I can see being convenient but I haven't seen any of this elsewhere.

also not light bar related but if anyone seems a similar device for our Gen 5, please post here:

It essentially swaps out the bottom rear reflectors to brake lights. The only other version of this I've seen is $500 on another website.

Otherwise for the light bars, I've seen a handful on ebay from scrap yards but none from an SE yet to see if the holes for the LED is already punched out or not (unlikely).

Those mods are for the already existing light bar to turn on with the break lights. That's why the X grade (the lowest consumer grade) is not compatible, that one doesn't include a functional light bar.

Do all the other grades in Japan get the full light bar?

That explanation would make sense but my understanding was the full light bar on upper trims is always on so this "mod" wouldn't be needed, no?

Yes and no, the light bar only turns on with the night lights (with headlights) the mod is so the light bar also turns on with the third break light during day
