Parts diagram, teardown or others for Gen 5?

    Toyota will show any replaceable part, like those LED bulbs—whether it is supplied with another part assembly or not. The only difference between the two part assemblies could be that LE/SE has removable caps vs. upper trims having removable LED bulbs over two holes on either side.

    Therefore, we won't know for sure unless someone removes the trim and takes a look. I would find it hard to believe that Toyota had two different versions of a complicated lamp assembly that look exactly the same made—it makes no sense from a logistics point of view.

    The labels indicate which parts can be ordered separately. The boxes indicate which parts are supplied as part of another part. Therefore those parts do not come as part of the assembly and must be ordered separately.

    We only know they only look the same from the outside.

    Looking at the repair manual, the LEDs plug directly into two electrical sockets in the rear light assembly. So it seems safe to assume that the higher-spec part has a wiring harness (and maybe some light pipes?), while the lower-spec one doesn't. That harness connects to a single connector in the "No. 2 back door wiring harness".

    And the bad news for people wanting to upgrade is that there are different E and H trim versions of the No.2 back door wiring harness (the one right at the back, covering cameras). 82185-47580 for E trim and 82185-47610 for H trim.

    And the worse news still is that there are multiple versions of the No. 1 back door harness - the bundle that runs from the No.2 harness to the main body. Lots of camera variants, but still a basic E/H variation.

    So in total I think you're going to need the pair of LEDs (although I think you get 2 as a single part, at least!), the new rear light assembly, and two new wiring harnesses.

    Lol. You preempted the reply I was working on. I was working in the opposite direction(LED->different wiring harnesses) and was just about to dig into the back door wiring harnesses.

    I'll add that the cord assembly within the lens is also different. The E version has one output to the 3rd brake light, the G/H version has three outputs.

    And I think you're correct about the gasket that started with car 2305. There must have been some wear or noise showing up on the early cars. My car is in the 3000s, so I can't verify if early cars came without it. If I owned a pre-2305, I'd probably get one just to be safe. It's less than $5.



    Finally, I wonder about the LED quantity. I always assumed the quantity listed meant that's how many you'd need to order to do the job. I like your idea better(because it's cheaper), but I wonder which is correct. My car is going in next week for it's regular service, so I'll ask the parts desk while I'm there.

    Ah, you're right, there is still a harness for the brake light in the E, so it's a different harness rather than no harness.

    Following through on the harnesses further - even worse news - there are also E/H variants of every other wiring harness, including the floor and roof ones - (not sure which one the door connects to). So even if you replaced the door harness, I'm not sure there'd be the connector in the body harness ready to accept it.

    I actually count about 23 versions of the floor harness!

    This would be one of the things they do differently on the Kinto U cars in Japan - they're "hardware upgradable", which would in part mean fitting more-than-bare-minimum harnesses.

    But if you're buying one outright, they're absolutely not giving you any excess copper. (Except that ridiculous 22kW charge cable they're giving us in Europe!)

    If it has no holes, carefully machine holes into it, put some LED bulbs, and tap into the harness, and you have a lighting light bar. ;)

    I don't like what Toyota did with Gen 5 Prius/Prime. In Gen 4, all trim levels were identical-looking except for the fog and accent lights in the Limited. Of course, the Limited also had the parking sensors.

    On the positive side, you could probably do a simple hack by just piggybacking off another lead. I bet the different wiring harnesses have the same end plugs, they're just missing wires. So you could just go back to where the back door harness splits off from the larger harness, find the wire that runs to the taillight, put a T-split on it, run a new wire along the back door harness until you get to the plug, then get the wiring repair kit that gives you the correct terminal end to go into the stock plug.

    I did this a couple times on my old gen3 when I added fog lights and an aftermarket stereo that needed the reverse signal to let the head unit know to switch to the backup camera. It let me stay as stock as possible while not having to replace major wiring harnesses.

    Hmm. Well, it said "quantity: 2" in the parts database, and it didn't seem to be referring to the number of parts being used, as everything else I looked where multiple were being used said "quantity: 1". But not that familiar with the parts system.

    10 to 1 you'll end up with very visible hot spots where the lights are mounted. I think the reason for the two different part numbers is that the internals of the lenses are very different. I'd be willing to bet that the G/H lenses have an internal structure to diffuse the light from the LEDs to create an even glow across the lens. But the E lenses are basically empty with a coating so you can't see through them.

    Like I said, I'll ask at the parts desk next Monday. There have been times where I've gotten multiple items from a single part number, but it's always been really little things like screws or clips.

    It is true that they didn't put the bulbs inside the assembly box outline, but also note that the dashed lines that usually indicate where the separately sold parts go in the assembly are also missing. So, again, we won't know sure until someone removes the trim and takes a look.

    Do you have a lighting light bar?

    No, I am 100% sure that you get only one bulb. ;)

    Screws and clips are packaged in bags of ten. So, if you were given more than one, it was probably not intentional.

    If I had to hazard a guess for a justification, it's that replacing 1 could leave you with uneven lighting. So always replace both. So no need to sell singles.

    Same with everything else they sell, like brakes. They are always sold in singles.

    What I am saying is that, unless you physically see the actual part, you won't know. Part diagrams are not always accurate.

    By pre-2035, are you talking of the VIN? If so, mine is <900. If you have a pic of the part so I can be sure of what it is, I can check it out and report back.

    Down the line that was going to be my idea. I was going to try piggybacking on the existing wiring or a trailer plug in and have a led brake strip in the centre lens there. I found led strips that have steady red, high brightness red and white for reverse as I thought it would be cool.

    However, I've looked at the trim and it seems like a pain to take off. You have to start with the top piece, then the two side pieces and then you get the back/bottom of the trunk door where it should be hidden. I did remove a small cap to try and check how it looks there but wasn't very conclusive. I'm also always a bit paranoid of the drivetrain warranty and don't want to mess to much with the car while it's still under warranty.

    On the plus side for the ambient lighting, I reused the approach of the Reddit post I linked. I found the matching connectors and I was going to try it with a led strip that is a bit different than the Reddit person and report back. It should all be plug and play so I am curious to see how it goes.

    I don't know if we should merge the current thread and this one but I figured I'd post it to keep track: Light-bar upgrade for LE and SE | Page 3 | PriusChat

    I've been slow on stuff. I can't seem to figure out exactly where the bulbs would go for the center light bar. This is an image from a HEV Limited trim centre piece:

    I took my trunk trim covers apart to check what it looked like and grabbed some pictures. Unfortunately, they kinda suck. I will post them here in case they help anyone though:

    The wiring looks fairly the same in the XLE Limited and the SE. I assumed the bulb would go where the plunger plug with the yellow tape would go. I tried to take a picture but it's hard to see the inside. Essentially there was a hole there with what looked like a sticker cover. Me and my sausage fingers had a hard time trying to see how to remove said film other than piercing it so I left it alone. I did try shining a light inside and I couldn't see anything in the centre brake light so I am not sure if that is actually the bulb. Otherwise I don't see where the bulbs would go so I'm kinda stuck...

    I am wondering if something like this could be used or if that is the type of bulb Toyota uses in these: テールランプをZ専用に変えちゃおう♪(トヨタ シエンタ・10系)by ヒキ - みんカラ

    If anyone has more diagrams to share or even an upper trim they'd be willing to look behind the boot, we can narrow down if it can be done without changing the piece.

    I believe the centre brake light on the SE and LE is actually different and doesn't refract light the same way but trying it seems to be the only way to be really sure.
