parking brake recall

So just an update, got the recall performed. Originally quoted me 2-3 hours, but got it done in 1 hour.

There was a pdf he was rifing through on how to perform the recall, and on it, I quickly saw that the timeframe allotted to perform the fix was 0.6 hours, but that's all I saw.

I always use the parking brake when getting out of the vehicle (and of course, shifting to P), and noticed no change in behavior (not that I expected to).

Glad to have gotten it out of the way.

 

I thought the fix won't come until December.

 

I know my 2017 came to the dealer with the fix already installed.
My local dealer has some needing the fix (including one sold but unable to deliver) and some OK to sell.

 

The fix is in place now.

 

2017 Prius 4 AT/ CX took delivery today Nov 2, 2017.
Today Emergency Break Recall fixed in 30 minutes at Toyota of Fort Worth.

YeHaaaa we are done now !

What about the passenger seat airbag recall. Any update on that? And wasn't there a 3rd recall for something else? Can't remember.

And I just remembered we need new nuts!

Everybody sure and get your upper strut nuts replaced,

We could all use new nuts at some point in our life.

 

Well, including myself there are plenty to choose from on this forum alone!

 

My rear struts are not rattling or making any noise. But I will ask the dealer to inspect it, next time I go in for an oil change.

 

Parking brake problem has been only revealed because of another underlying problem. Many people leave their cars in D, applying the parking brakes.

In 3 months I also did it several times, meanwhile in 9 years of owning Gen 2 it never happened to me even a single time! In my view, the problem is (at least for me and maybe other people coming from Gen 2) the location of the Parking button. The other thing is a poor illumination of the P button. I think even in the dark if someone is in the car, the P should always be illuminated, not only when the headlights are ON. Such, I pressed something else on the panel in the dark, thinking it was P and applied the parking brake. Luckily quickly realized the car was in D!.

We had to change our operating policy after stopping. Before I would press P and apply parking brakes simultaneously, and then turn off the car. Now I mindfully and concisely press P before doing anything else. Then simultaneously apply the parking brakes and turn off the car

 

That is good feedback that should be heard by Toyota. Simulated testing will not catch issues like this.

 

agree that the p button should always be illuminated. i often pull into the garage and turn the headlights off, then i can't see the button. of course, hitting power works just as well.
but i would never leave the car in drive with the parking brake on. there have been a few reports here, even getting out of the car with parking brake off but hard to believe it's widespread.

 

It'd be good if there was a physical impediment to exiting the car without putting it in Park and turning it off. In a traditional car you typically can't pull the key out without the car being in Park, and the car turned off.

More like "the door won't open", lol. Yeah I know, too extreme, say for when the car has burst into flame, but something to intentionally trip you up. Like if you have to take a letter with you: prop it up against the front door, that sort of thing.

of course, it's the simplicity of sks that is so appealing. if someone getting out of their car while it's in drive, has to run over their toes once in awhile, so be it.

 

Is there any reason why the car should need to keep running if the fob moves away from proximity with the car? Say if the fob gets out of range the car shuts down, and puts itself in Park in the process?

I'm not sure of the answer, just a thought. One problem might be that it would require constant handshakes between the car and the fob, which would rapicly run the fob battery down.

 

The car already detects if the fob moves from inside the car to outside.
I leave mine "running" while I leave to check the mail on my way home. The car beeps a couple of times to complain.
