The OP has the clear, protective film installed. @jrodz09 has the issue on a white car without the film. Their photos weren't directly embedded in the post above.

It appears like the primer may not have been completely applied, and missed those corners.

Took it to the dealer for the 15k service this last Saturday and made it a point to address it with the service rep who then passed it on to the service manager. They ended up washing my car (which I wasnt happy about for obvious reasons) so they could have a better look. He insisted that he will get in touch with the DSPM to schedule me for an appointment to get it checked out. This dealership is not the one I purchased the car at, but they seem like they will take care of it once the DSPM gives the go. I will continue to follow up, definitely looks like with time it will only get worse. Wouldn't expect anyone to pay good money for a brand new car to have it start peeling in less than a year. As far as the OP and the red Prime, yes they do have the protective mask, but it still doesn't cover the area where we all are having peeling issues. Keep on visiting the dealers until they put a TSB on this matter, so it's a more smoothly done warranty fix.

The Red one is. I don't think there is an UP-Charge for the white.

Yes, they both were up charges.

Wonder if the 'special' paint was actually bad or too thick/brittle

Yup. White was a premium tri-coat for the pearl effect. Still waiting on the follow up by the service manager from my local dealership. Will keep yall updated until the situation is taken care of.

So here's my most recent update.

Just picked up my car from the service department at the Toyota dealership.

It came back worse than before. The original section that was affected was the driver's bumper and fender seam. The paint on the bumper was peeling from the two panels rubbing.

The body shop at the dealership repainted that section, and the paint has already "bunched up."

    IMG_9253.JPG

Then I found out that the passenger's side has the same peeling now. During the warranty repair, the bumper was removed, repainted, and supposedly adjusted.

    IMG_9266.JPG

Then I found another spot under the headlight where the bumper touched another part. There's peeling there too.

    IMG_9256.JPG

Basically, the paint on the bumper sucks, and anywhere where there's contact with the bumper is going to show peeling paint.

I just picked up my car today right before closing. (I was notified my car was ready the last hour before closing.) Before I drove off, I spoke with the same service manager to whom I showed the initial defect a few weeks ago. I was told to come back the day after the holiday, and they'll give me another loaner car.

The service manager said that the repainted section is a dealership issue, whereas the additional peeling section would be considered as a Toyota issue.

    Any suggestions?

So I got my car back. The dealership's collision center repainted the peeling part. For the most part, the repainted part looks good. However, I did notice this, which I do not recall seeing before. It's obvious enough that I would notice.

    IMG_9423.JPG

I told the collision center advisor that this wasn't there before. I got the collision manager involved. They all claim rock chips.

I looked at it again when I got home. It looks way too perfect to be rock chips from the road. Two rows of three "rock chips" all spaced equally? The bottom half tilts downwards. The top half tilts upwards.

    Any thoughts?

Is that a plastic strip between the two panels? It looks like it's there to prevent rubbing between the two parts? I wouldn't expect paint to stick to that too well.

This situation is very disappointing. Primes have peeling paint already?! And several reports of windshields cracking? Excuse me for being blunt, but is Toyota quality taking a dive? That is totally unacceptable.

The picture you referenced was after the first repair attempt. The paint already wrinkled by the time I went to pick up the car.

My car has been in 3 times to the body shop. First one was the wrinkling paint, second attempt I never saw because the service manager returned it after inspecting it. Third attempt looked okay except that damage to the bottom.

I asked two other collision centers if that damage was consistent with rock chips. They said no. It looked to perfect to be rock chips.

Agreed. Those don't appear to be rock chips. That almost looks the paint bubbled a bit? I have a couple tiny rock chips on the front facia of my 2016, and they don't look like that. Mine are just tiny pricks.

There's actually a paint protection film on it. A bit of the film actually tore and it looks like some of the paint got lifted with it as well.

The spacing at both locations being equal leads me to believe that they had something holding onto the panel at that point while they sprayed it and didn't properly even it out after finalizing the work. There is no way you get a rock chip on the top and bottom in exactly the same places 3 times. Statistically it just isn't possible, and if you did, you should definitely play the lottery because you are an anomaly. Now if they said someone's dog bit your car, that I would actually buy :D

Update on my situation: So the DSPM checked out the car according to the SPM from my dealership here in Visalia and all my wife got told was that they will call me. Which I have yet to receive a follow up or anything, pretty ridiculous wasted day. I will be giving them a call soon on to what is going on with this issue and why they are not resolving it.

I just took delivery of a prime from Langway Toyota in Rhode Island. It has 8 miles on the clock and exhibits the paint peel (I'm writing this literally not having left the dealer lot and using their customer wifi).

I'm 1000 miles from home so I kind of pushed them to document the issue kind of extensively. They did seem kind of apprehensive about escalating this issue and they claimed that the car would not be marked sole until the overnight system update (after which they claim they would supply me with documentation of this issue).

Talked with someone at corporate (800-331-433) and they told me that it was going to be a dealer issue unless their DSPM says it's a manufacturing defect (bringing it back here is going to be kind of an issue). In the end I pushed them hard to forward my issue to their DSPM so that this could get solved (hopefully at the corporate level) so my repairs can get done in the Midwest. So far, been at the dealer for nearly 4 hours. Hopefully Toyota and the dealer actually come through on this.

Feel your pain, should not be something they cant handle. I bought mine a few hundred miles down south and just dropped it off at the dealer today after some wait for the DSPM to approve my repairs. Wondering how well will their job come out as. OP Prime came out looking like crap as soon as it he got it fixed. So lets hope for the best.

I'm hoping that they let me pick the shop because I know a pretty good local place.

In my opinion, this issue should be stickied so that new prime buyers check (and can address) this before they walk off the lot. I think they shouldn't be stuck with a bill down the line if the issue gets worse.

Anyone have any progress updates? I haven't had time to drop by my local dealer yet.
