P1121 - Coolant Control Valve Replacement (with pics)

They warranted the part which is cool, but given the new one has the same, what I call issue I am not installing it yet because I'm not confident it wont just do the same thing and I will have just wasted time

 

Isn't the Toyota Genuine one only $70.00 or so?

It very well may be, honestly I didn't consider genuine vs aftermarket when I initially replaced it. I called the local auto store and they were able to get one the next day. So now I find myself in this pickle. Is that port supposed to come unplugged so easily or am I crazy?

 

I've never installed an aftermarket one, but I hear those caps pop off of them. I've never seen a genuine one fail like that. With that said, I'd assume they're not supposed to pop off.

Any Idea as to why the plug is popping out? more specifically would it be just the coolant control valve is whack or would something else be the root cause? What if I were to some how secure the plug in place would all be well?

 

I realize you are not a car guy based upon your screen name. You should prefer to purchase Toyota-branded parts as the general rule, unless you have a very good reason not to. In my experience, generic aftermarket parts typically fit poorly and are of poor quality.

Since you know this particular part has a quality issue, why not return it for a refund, and buy the correct part? Many Toyota dealers sell parts at a ~25% discount online. Try parts.com which is an easy way to secure discounted Toyota parts.

 

I'd add that one should pick their suppliers wisely as I've come across counterfeit Toyota Genuine parts. If the price is too good to be true, it's probably counterfeit, especially on eBay.

Shocking news. What part did your discover was fake? Inverter pump?

 

I thank you all for your input I will be sure to choose suppliers more wisely in all future en-devours. I will not drive the car in current situation for obvious reasons. would securing the plug in place buy me some time or will this cause further damage to the car? It is my wifes car and we are currently sharing my truck (86 c10 chevy) which is not the greatest on gas

 

It might buy you some time but keep in mind every time that engine gets hotter than normal it's getting closer to a leaking head gasket.

My 2007 is giving the P1121. I wasn't worried about it much until I realized it won't pass emissions with a check engine light. I went back through my records and see that 3 years ago, there was a TSB and the "HV ELECTRIC WATER PUMP" was replaced then, at my local dealer. It's worth noting, that I never had a P1121 before it was replaced.

Does anyone know if Toyota might cover the replacement, since the TSB one seems to be failing? Only 30,000 miles have passed in those 3 years.

If that doesn't look likely, can anyone recommend a shop in the south Denver area that could put in the replacement at a reasonable price?

1. The recall notice was for the inverter coolant pump.

2. DTC P1121 relates to failure of the engine coolant valve which has nothing to do with #1 above.

 

What's a reasonable price?

Just happened to me today in CA
'09 Prius with 120k
However, I had to argue with the service tech at Toyota
It took him 4 phone calls until he finally relented and said that because this valve is associated with emissions, it's covered under the special CA warranty (10yrs, 150k)
Glad I researched it here first

 

If you have a salvaged vehicle, they really didn't need to cover any of the warranty items.

 

my '06 is salvaged, but Toyota replaced the traction battery under special CA warranty two years ago when it was under 150K
the '09 is clean title, and that's the one that just threw the 1121 Coolant Control Valve code

 

Good thing Toyota didn't know your 06 was salvaged

 

My 05 Prius has the P1121 code so I have ordered coolant control valve and since my engine coolant needs replaced wouldn’t this be the time to do it which would save me from clamping off hoses when I change my coolant valve? Makes sense to me?!
