"Interval between mRNA doses

The second dose of Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines should be administered as close to the recommended interval as possible, but not earlier than recommended (i.e., 3 weeks [Pfizer-BioNTech] or 1 month [Moderna]). However, second doses administered within a grace period of 4 days earlier than the recommended date for the second dose are still considered valid. If it is not feasible to adhere to the recommended interval and a delay in vaccination is unavoidable, the second dose of Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines may be administered up to 6 weeks (42 days) after the first dose. Currently, only limited data are available on efficacy of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines administered beyond this window."

My second dose is already delayed, waiting for that provider to get another allocation. We have specifically be told to not restart, even if we somehow go past 42 days. At least until receiving updated guidance.

 

I am now seeking any available vaccination in China because I need to make domestic travel to other Provinces including some hot ones. If success turns me into a carrot or whatever, I'll post. Assuming a continued presence of fingers.

 

And that's why I appreciate DeSantis standing up to those who wanted all doses used immediately. When both doses are reserved at the same time for the same person, delays in the supply line don't mean delays in the second dose. Never trust politicians or supply lines. Still, for some unexplained reason, Sam's Club delayed our second dose by one day. It could just be that maybe they were anticipating a busy day on our day or maybe would be missing a pharmacist.

 

Well....the shot came to me....or at least an appointment.
Pfizer shot(s) with the first being scheduled for Thursday. I will not have to travel out of state, or even very far out of my county, and because time slots are widely available for people in my cohort now I can roll up my sleeves guilt free.
I thought about getting the antibody test to prove my theory of already having had the Rona and letting somebody else get my time slot, but the vaccine in free and the antibody test is $100.

The only thing concern is that Pfizer #2 will be within a week of Shingrex #2....but my provider can deconflict those.

My own beloved home state of Indiana is one of the states that work WITH religious groups that sometimes eschew modernity and bring them somewhat close to societal norms WRT disease prevention.

 

I think there is a greater belief here that two half-dosed people are a greater step forward than just one full-dosed person, so there is a greater willingness to get all the vaccines out into arms quickly. Though this also varies by outlet. Even one dose provides very considerable protection against serious disease and death, even when it doesn't hold off milder disease as well.

There have also been a few refrigerator failures here. The big one, with 1650 doses inside, was discovered when an alarm blared just before 9 pm one night. That lead to a quick mobilization, the doses were split up among several health providers, impromptu mass vaccinations sites set up, word put out to whatever waiting lists and social media they could grab -- and the last dose reached an arm about 3:30 a.m. None wasted. But it seems they would prefer to not face a repeat scramble.

 

I've read claims going both ways. I suspect that there just isn't enough data to know for sure one way or another. I haven't read up on the J&J vaccine much but I think it's interesting that they say it's not as effective as the others in preventing COVID but at the same time it's 100% effective in preventing death by COVID.

I'll bet someone about had a heart attack over that one. Yikes!

I'm seeing conflicting opinions too, and don't believe we'll know a 'correct' answer until too late.

But at least the original trials showed that second dose delays out to 42 days are not an issue. While something nearing a thousand trial subjects had their second doses even later than that, their numbers were too small to draw statistical conclusions.

That 100% effectiveness of the J&J product (at least in their limited sample size of the trial) in preventing death and hospitalization is the part I really care about. I'm much less worried about dealing with a mild illness.

Note also that the J&J trials faced a different mix of virii, including some of the newer troublesome variants that the earlier products didn't face, so its 'score' is not directly comparable.

In the end I'm suspecting we'll be getting multiple vaccination rounds as this disease shifts to endemic mode, so we'll have opportunity to try the other brands too. I just hope that doesn't get going before the rest-of-world has reasonable opportunity to get their first round full vaccinations.

I'll bet several people did. At least they had the equipment, plans, communications, and staff and volunteer lists ready to pull it off.

 

I'm near Raytheeagle. well, within 80 miles or so. In our area the hospitals and clinics were managing the inoculations for their members. As a result, my wife and I ended up driving 31 miles to Santa Clara to get our Moderna doses. The day that they opened up for 65+, I snagged a Feb 5 date. By the time I clicked "yes" on all the forms on the web site, someone else got my time slot. I ended up with a march 30th appointment. Luckily, my wife took a chance and hit the "reschedule" button a huge number of times until she got a date (Feb 4) that was within a week. I did the same and got an appointment that was the day after hers.

Yesterday we both got our second dose. Today we both had fever and were uncomfortable for most of the day. I'm feeling fine now. No more fever.

Off topic: On the way to the clinic yesterday I put the prime in HV mode and it reported that I got 69 MPG for the trip. That includes climbing a 400 foot incline through a pass over a coastal mountain range.

 

Note that she is not yet "fully vaccinated" by the CDC's meaning of that phrase, but must wait until two weeks out:

"For the purposes of this guidance, people are considered fully vaccinated for COVID-19 ≥2 weeks after they have received the second dose in a 2-dose series (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna), or ≥2 weeks after they have received a single-dose vaccine (Johnson and Johnson [J&J]/Janssen )."

Yeah, we know the details. She is following the CDC's V-safe APP to the word. But the fact she does not have to worry about getting the second shot is a big relief. After 2 full days, she is still complaining about body aches and fatigue. It's good that she does not have to experience it again.

Some just like to take contrarian positions for the attention they feel it brings them and the opportunity to try and out argue others.

Very similar to flat earthers who no more believe the earth is flat than there is a man in the moon. They take the position that the earth is flat to get attention and formulate arguments that show how smart they are.

My dad got both shots and he is 97, I am very excited to get vaccinated and to be able to see him in person and visit face to face again. He is just not comfortable seeing others until they get vaccinated and I will respect that and just visit him from the sunroom while he stays inside the house for now.

Got my first shot of the Moderna version last Friday at the UNLV Student Union in Las Vegas. They were very well organized and well staffed. Appointment was for 9 am; the needle was in my arm at 9:03. They scheduled the second shot for April 2.

With my background being in retail and wholesale pharmacy I had a very interesting discussion with one of the UNLV doctors. She's been working on this for over a year as they had students returning from China at the very outset. She believes we're looking at annual booster shots to deal with variants that will continue to develop. The medical companies are already working on it. Unfortunately it won't be able to be combined with the flu vaccines because they are two totally incompatible technologies in the vaccines.

I did manage to give her a good laugh when I asked where the students from their behavioral science labs were observing us from. She looked puzzled so I explained. The line weaved through the upstairs portion of the building like a maze with well-spaced dots on the floor and barriers to keep us separated by 6 feet. After negotiating the maze we were rewarded with a needle in the arm instead of food like the laboratory mice get. Then they sat us down for 15-20 minutes to observe our reactions to the shots. It felt like a college lab experiment to me. She nodded in agreement and said she'd have fun sharing that with the other doctors.
