I have a flat tire. I should have brought asparagus (a spare with us).

Ahh, not the sharpest knife in the block.

I was thinking along the lines of the Monty Python sketch: self defense against attackers with fruits or vegetables.

Road hazard puncture ruined a Toyo NanoEnergy A29 tire on my 2018 Prius--only 4000 miles on it.Happened day 1 of 3 day weekend--no tire stores. Toyota dealers open. Our dealer, 25 miles away, ordered one today (Tuesday) hopefully to get to dealer tomorrow. The emergency kit that replaces even a compact spare wouldn't work in our situation. What do you do if on a trip, in an area with no cell service, and get a blow out? Road service hauls you too the nearest dealer, drops you off, and you are stuck waiting for goodness knows how long to get a new tire delivered. We will order a compact spare kit this week after talking to our dealer--if it is installed on some of the lower models why can't it be retrofitted into a Prius 4? I'm now a member of the "Pissed Off at Toyoto" Club!

GRRRRR!!!! I agree. Even the wheelbarrow tyre is hopeless if you're <80km from a tyre service centre.

Yup! Been there. Done that on a holiday weekend. I carry a full sized spare whenever out of town by more than fifty miles because I have no desire to spend a few nights in the middle of nowhere. What a dumb decision to dump the compact spare. I could lose my life stuck in the sticks because some idiot decided to save less than $150. on what should be a necessity in any car. Remember that AAA in the US can only change your tire, not repair it. So they will haul your car to the nearest tire place...if you are lucky.

    Here’s what I do:
I have one kit for my Prius, and another for my BMW, which also needs the scissor jack.
    The parts:
    Vlair 12V tire inflator
BlackJack tire plug kit (definitely the best brand)
    Small plier/cutter kit
    Small bottle of water
Even smaller bottle of dish soap
Small spray bottle (which will leak; keep empty). You mix the soap and water to find the leak, if needed
    Rubber gloves
    Small flashlight

Plowing through old threads. Looks like mendel-leisk has a good answer. And if you get enough flat tires you can switch to all Corolla rims.

Irritating part is the new limited tires for 2019 are $249. I got the next Yokohama down for $130 ish at tire kingdom.

Trading every 3 years did not help.

I pulled out of my driveway this week, to find the neighbor fighting with their scissor jack and temp spare.

I pulled my BlackJack kit out of my car, pulled the screw out of his tire, and had him plugged and inflated in five minutes.

Im not fussed about not having a spare tyre.

My private vehicle does about 20,000 Km a year and my van does about 30,000 but with a heavy load. Both my motorbikes do a few thousand too.

In 26 years of driving I have had one or two flat tyres. None of them in the last 13 years. In fact come to think about it, I can't recall seeing a vehicle with a flat tyre either despite having a rather large service beat.

I am not saying they don't happen, just that for me it's not a big thing to have no on board spare. Tyres, suspension and the road surface are better than they used to be.

I carry a can of the emergency tyre repair gunk as well as the supplied compressor and goop.

If that's not working, I will have a spare wheel sent out. I use a summer and winter set, so there is always something to get it going.

Last resort, that's what breakdown coverage is for.

Many of the places we go to in Oregon, USA, have no cell service, even on interstate highways if not near a town. Even then, a tow could get you to a rather remote town with not much more than a service station. If you are lucky it might have a motel where you could stay for goodness knows how long before a new tire could be sent out from a city on the Grayhound bus service! We live within 50 miles of at least 4 Toyota dealers and practically next door to a regional large chain tire store that sells Toyo tires, but could not get one for 5 days after I had my flat. We are still working on getting a temporary spare but will do so soon. It just makes me made when you pay for a higher model vehicle you don't get the safety that a lesser model provides--this is so frustrating! What part of Germany are you in, Griogarach--we lived in Kitzingen for 3 years 40 years ago.

Do you have cell phone service everywhere you drive in your country?

The western portions of the U.S. and Canada are far from fully covered.

Yep, I do for the most part. Hence why it works for me. If I happened to be in one of the few areas where I didn't get a signal from one of the two different providers in my dual SIM phone, then I would hitch a ride to town.

I don't know why your post comes across as combative. I understand many parts of the planet have sucky coverage. But the answer I gave was what I do.

The lack of coverage in the US and Canada is of no relevance to my answer, and interests me not a lot.

I'm sure most folk are capable of adapting to their own situation.

We're you at Larson or Harvey?

I'm about 20 minutes drive from Kitzingen, and pass through a couple of times a week. It's all gone now. Schweinfurt and Würzburg too.

I've been in and out of DE since 2003,

    +1

I am with you on this one. For over 10 years, we drove Toyota Sienna minivan with no spare all over the country. We had several flats when the van still had run-flat tires on, but ended up towing the car anyway. Flat never happened after switching to conventional tires without spare. In 40+ years of driving I have not had a single occasion I had to change tire with an on-board spare. I worry more for not having spare wiper blade in my car than spare tire. Although, with my current PRIME which is also not equipped with a spare and unlike regular Gen4 Pri, there is no space under the deck to store one, I now carry a full size spare on occasions I travel a long distance. I am not as adventurous as I use to be. lol
