On models with no spare tire, what are folks doing?

The Prime has 15" stock alloy wheels. Still no joy at Tire Rack. They have tires, but not the 16 or 17" space saving steel wheels.

 

AFAIK the same temp spare is used for all 4th Gen, and it's the same a 3rd gen. details as per my post #198.

I had known that the pattern and size were the same; more wanting to absolutely know if the lug nuts that the Prime uses might seat properly in the donut wheel.

While out to dinner tonight in my wife's car, it occurred to me the donut spare in her car might fit mine. Lexus CT200h 2013. Looking that up now in her owner's manual.

I'm driving the very rural back roads of NW Nebraska in a couple weeks. Extremely remote, as in, maybe no cell service rural and some gravel farm roads.

WINNER? I hope Toyota and Lexus share the same 5 bolt pattern diameter. I guess the only way to find out is to swap them out and see.

A little embarrassed, but what were the chances that a compact spare being the identical size was parked just 3 feet away in our own driveway? Now, the hard part, will she notice it is missing for a week?

Yeah we alternate between OEM 3rd gen 17" rims and 15" Corolla steel rims (with snows). They're all the same, the inner seat at least. It's just with the alloys, the shoulder of the nut passes right through, the washer does the clamping.

 

I don't know about these washers. Are there washers on the Prime alloys? I only have the one set of lug nuts. I guess I'll have to try and remove one of these to see what they're using to hold the alloy wheels on.

 

The nut has both a seat, for steel rims, typically the temp spare, and a captured washer, that does the clamping with the alloys. Yeah have a look and you'll see clearer how it works.

I use some regular nuts with our steel snows; could use the special "alloy" nuts, but they'd look odd. Also means I can detail them and keep them out of salted winter road conditions.

There was discussion about this a year or more ago - quite a few Gen 3 owners said that a standard Corolla wheel will work fine as a spare on Gen 3 - I haven't heard if it's the same for Gen 4. Maybe you check one out at a wrecking yard?

 

Part numbers for that Corolla rim, and the plain lug nuts:

Corolla steel rim, part no: 42611-02471 (2003-2008 corolla or matrix, CE, LS, S)
steel rim lug nuts, part no: 90942-01007 (plain, open-ended, galvanized)

In 2010 I purchased both through a dealership, when getting snow tires. The rims were $70 apiece, and a set of 20 nuts something around $31. (Canadian dollars)

That rim might be easier to find, and takes regular size tire. Again, the temporary spare rim part number:

42611-47630

 

I had a tire dealer try fitting the donut spare to the Prime, and it looked good to their eyes. Good might be relative. To me it looked creepy and unsafe.

Here's my paranoia about this...
I am not so sure the standard flat-faced lug nuts that come with the alloys are the best for a steel rim that has those concave lug nut holes -- seems the flat nut surface area to a recessed hole could be a problem. Is it?

Should I buy a set of five old fashioned steel lug nuts that look like a bullet? Would that offer a stronger and tighter fit in case I need to mount the spare wheel?

 

You can get regular nuts, I've got utilitarian (open-ended, galvanized) lug nuts for use with our (Corolla) snow tire rims:

lug nuts p/n: 90942-01007

But: there's nothing wrong with the regular alloy rim style lug nuts, for temporary use with the spare. They have a captured washer for clamping the alloy rim, and the proper tapered shoulder, for use with the spare. They look a little odd, but they work.

Just think it through: for the fourth gens that come with a spare, no extra lug nuts are supplied.

No, you can't: it's..., well I'm not sure how they get it on there, but it's captured, can't come off.

Hopefully lightening will not strike me, but I believe 15" and 17" rim interface is identical. And one temp spare serves for both.

That's the situation on 3rd gen. we go from OEM 17" to 15" (Corolla) rims with snows.

 

Here, you have a choice. 15" with donut pretend spare. OR - 17" without a spare option. So there is no "standard" spare, but, as with Mendel, I'd suspect the interface is the same on all models.

But, in the past, I've found some very odd things manufacturers did (like a car in the '70s which had both imperial and metric bolts). Trying one out is probably the best - do you know someone else with a PRIUS?

 

I believe the outer diameters are similar enough for the same spare to work. Didn't somebody get a temp spare from a Corolla?
