Okada Projects Plasma Direct Coils

    Actually a scam is when a person says they will give you something in exchange for your money and then does not give you what you wanted, that is a scam.

    A.K.A. "rug pull" or "bait and switch"

    I am not selling anything, I actually buy and try these products and report about them.

    I also try and get a discount for others.

    So how am I scamming anyone?

    You can lead a horse to water but you can not make it drink it...

    $700 water is too expensive to drink... But I'd for sure pay a couple hundred for the possibility to have a more advanced ignition coil design... Perhaps in time through them or others that price will become available?

    I wish they could be that cheap.

    I paid like $300 for Duralast coils with lifetime warranty so I would assume that these coils with modifications will be more than that.

    In fairness, a few of the things that review assumes not to be possible (which might have been right, for the specific igniters they were testing) would not be flat-out impossible with the Toyota igniters. I'm thinking of "The only way to add multi spark to any coil is to modify the control system sending the signal and they have added nothing in the system capable of doing this" ... "They aren’t changing the dwell time because there is no flash of the DME so for starts they must be ¼ the resistance" ... and so on, and they're talking about being able to measure the primary resistance, so maybe the ones they had were for an application simpler than Toyota's igniters.

    With a Toyota one, you haven't got any way from the outside to measure the primary resistance, because there's the whole transistorized control circuit inside there in the way. And while nobody has reflashed the ECM to send a different pattern of IGT pulses, it might not be completely impossible that Okada buried a leetle beety signal processor in there to make sparks on a different pattern based on the pulses from the ECM. The Toyota igniters have +B and ground pins, so they could have power for some fancy circuit in there.

    As devil's advocate, I'll say it's not impossible they could have done such a thing.

    On the other hand, if their product in 2017 involved the addition of red anodized aluminum and a clip, then I wonder how much more than that they might be doing now.

    Another possible difference is that the 2017 review is of “Okada Plasma Coils”, while the current product and subject of this thread is “Okada Plasma Direct Coils” (emphasis added), so could possibly be a 'new improved' product series with increased function. Though if this were true, then wouldn't we expect to see a price increase too?

    As the review suggests, anyone who tests this, ought to compare it to new OEM parts, not to used old parts.

    Did anyone accuse you of scamming anyone in this thread? If so, I missed it.

    The scam accusation was made against the seller of the product in the title of this thread.

    From the guy you said I was racist to.

    By the way the old review you linked to, and if I read it all correctly, is from another company that makes coils.

    So I would think they would love to tarnish any competitions products.

    I dont promote for thieves or scammers.

    Only legit businesses with real products.

    But I did not say that YOU were scamming......unless you actually know their claims are BS.

    I am not aware of them being thieves or scammers and I do not think they are since they go through a tough process to get CARB compliant certification.

    If @RightOnTime can chime in and state his findings then maybe that can help with any doubts about the product being fake.

    CARB certification has NOTHING to do with their performance claims.
    That ONLY means that their product actually performs the basic function AND does not mess up the emissions.

    CARB is NOT "certifying" their claims.

    The Okada unit in the review above was an actual Bosch product, still showing the Bosch factory markings, already having all necessary certifications, that they slightly modified. If their modifications are minor or even not material to the certifications, then any new certifications, if needed at all, should be simple, not tough.

    I have talked about this before with another product, in regards to selling a part that is relabeled, it is a trademark and no business can simply slap a sticker on a product and call it their own.

    They have to show and prove what they have done to make it different.

    CARB certification will note this and give the "new" product a compliance.

    I would say the review fuzzy1 linked to is just a low level company trying to steal customers and talk crap on anothers product.

    They never showed anything other than the coil and just talked about their testing it.

    Besides all that, the coils are not the same as the one I am talking about for the prius.

    Made in Japan, I would not think they use BOSCH which is German.

    I'm not an expert in trademark law (nor am I assuming that you are), but as I understand it, the law may give Bosch attorneys a cause of action if you're relabeling their product, they don't like it, and they want to do something about it. I'm not sure anyone else enforces their trademark rights if they don't.

    I wonder if it's possible CARB keeps records or minutes of such determinations. If so, maybe they'd have details of what was shown and proven.

    Searching there under 'Ignition Coils', and under 'Ignition System / Ignition System Modification', I found no hint of Okada Projects, or of Plasma Projects.

    But I did find the Plasma Direct, a direct replacement ignition coil, and the Plasma Booster, an add-on spark enhancement device, Executive Order D-557. However, this certification was issued on April 17, 2003, to a manufacturer named Ignition Solutions, based in San Diego, not to Okada (Japan) or to Plasma Projects (Netherlands).

    And this certification applies only for some specifically listed 2003 and older vehicle models. And the approved Toyota models for these products, do not include any Prius.

    Can you please point me to the additional CARB EOs that I am overlooking?

    It isn't like this CARB EO covers much territory. Basically, this just means that it won't increase emissions, and did not affect the vehicle's ability to perform OBD II monitoring. Little else.

    Relating to Exemptions Under Section 27156
    of the Vehicle Code
    IGNITION SOLUTIONS
    Plasma Direct and Plasma Booster
    Pursuant to the authority vested in the Air Resources Board by Section 27156 of the Vehicle
    Code; and
    Pursuant to the authority vested in the undersigned by Section 39515 and Section 39516 of the
    Health and Safety Code and Executive Order G-02-003;
    IT IS ORDERED AND RESOLVED: That the installation of the Plasma Direct and Plasma
    Booster, manufactured and marketed by Ignition Solutions, Silverton Avenue, Suite E, San
    Diego, California 92126 has been found not to reduce the effectiveness of the applicable
    vehicle pollution control system and, therefore, is exempt from the prohibitions of Section
    27156 of the Vehicle Code for the vehicle applications listed in Exhibit A
    The Plasma Direct is a direct replacement ignition coil. The Plasma Booster is an add-on
    spark enhancement device that is installed by attaching one wire to the negative coil terminal
    and the other to a ground source. The Plasma Direct and Plasma Booster are sold separately
    as an individual device.
    This Executive Order is valid provided that the installation instructions for the Plasma Direct
    and Plasma Booster will not recommend tuning the vehicle to specifications different from
    those submitted by the device manufacturer.
    This Executive Order shall not apply to any Ignition Solutions' Plasma Direct and Plasma
    Booster advertised, offered for sale, sold with, or installed on a new motor vehicle prior to or
    concurrent with transfer to an ultimate purchaser.
    Changes made to the design or operating conditions of the Plasma Direct and Plasma Booster,
    as exempt by the Air Resources Board, which adversely affect the performance of the vehicle's
    pollution control system shall invalidate this Executive Order.
    Marketing of the Plasma Direct and Plasma Booster using any identification other than that
    shown in this Executive Order or marketing of the Plasma Direct and Plasma Booster for an
    application other than those listed in this Executive Order shall be prohibited unless prior
    approval is obtained from the Air Resources Board.
    This Executive Order does not constitute any opinion as to the effect the use of the Plasma
    Direct. and Plasma Booster may have on any warranty either expressed or implied by the
    vehicle manufacturer.

    This exemption is issued based on information supplied by the device manufacturer which
    demonstrates that the Plasma Direct and Plasma Booster meet the requirements of
    compliance criteria for ignition system components as specified under the "Procedures for
    Exemption of Add-On and Modified Parts" and therefore, will not increase emissions. This
    Executive Order is also based on an On Board Diagnostic II (OBD II) testing conducted on a
    2001 model year 1.8L Audi TT with the Plasma Direct installed and a 2002 model-year 4.0L
    Jeep Wrangler with the Plasma Booster installed. The Plasma Direct and Plasma Booster
    when installed on the vehicle did not affect the vehicle's ability to perform OBD II monitoring. ....

    I talked to @RightOnTime about his experience with the coil packs and he said they helped cut 2 seconds off of his lap time with the NGK Premium RX Spark Plugs…
