A summary of all of these posts would be:

A do it yourself oil change means changing the filter and dumping the oil, slowly putting in three quarts and check for a halfway mark on the dipstick 15 minutes later on level ground.

Drive one week and recheck the oil level, adding more in a trickle if a full crankcase is desired.

If anyone thinks that is incorrect, let me know because this is what I intend on doing with my oil changes. From other posts, the overfilling of this engine is a common problem even at toyota dealerships. Doing it right myself is a better proposition. I had the local Toyota place change the oil in the 4x4 transfer case, they did not re-install the oil plug. I couldn't get them to admit in writing they did that either, they put a new one in with no paperwork to avoid documenting their own screwup.

At 15,000 plus miles, I've had three oil changes at the dealer and they have all been over-full by at least 1/8th inch. I was wondering if this would account for lower gas mileage due to too much engine friction.
