Oil Filter Housing Damaged

Why is this happening?? I’d say the ubiquitous battery powered impact wrenches?

Yep I have mixed emotions....thrilled about the fact my new 21 Prius now uses the same spin-in filter as my old 2008 Corolla (which is still running just fine) but my wife's 2017 Prius has the cartridge type.
Amayam says they have no oil filter brackets (15609-OT060) and "permanently out of stock" so I checked with McGeorge Toyota and they have one for $80 but it's saying, "This part does not fit your 2017 Toyota Prius" So is that just a lie? On the Armstrong Blog, it looks like they did install that part.
Does anybody have a source for buying that part for less than $80? Seems a little high of a price for a small piece of aluminum.

I looked on Amayama last night, and if you use the 'old' part numbers (Mendel put them up), you'll get parts from the UAE. I tried to create an account on Amayama to buy them (maybe), but it wanted to know if I was a robot, with no way to TELL them I wasn't.

 

I can see why: their software is straightforward, looks at the parts that officially come with the car, can't anticipate mix-and-match like this.

GREAT! For those who've ordered from Amayama, what is the shipping time from Japan? (I've bought from Hong Kong before and it took so long I had forgotten I ordered something!)

It's for 2018 model year, has both the paper filter only option AND the spin-on (further down the page. In my experience, before COVID bogged them down some, it took a week to ten dayish for receipt.

Worth noting: if I pick 2019 model year, "Prius" is no longer listed, only "Prius A", which appears to maybe be a Prius c?

Also, IIRC payment was a little tricky, something wasn't responding, I contacted them, and they suggested to try another browser, which worked.

Here's a screen grab of how the page looks for me now, and it's even cheaper than when I bought. The bracket with part no ending in "60" is what I bought; looks slightly different, sort of ice-cream cone shape instead of plain round, where the oil filter spins on. But perfectly functional.

 

Wow, I got all three conversion items from Amayama for $62.14 including shipping! (Coming from UAE, though, which is odd but I've been there!!) Toyota's are very popular in the Middle East but it's always bugged me seeing terrorists driving them around...get out of my Toyota!!!

 

I use a JavaScript-and-other-mischief-blocker (uMatrix in my case), and the usual thing I find when a site wants me to prove I'm not a robot is that they are trying to use the reCAPTCHA service that Google acquired. It usually requires allowing two or three extra JavaScript sources (like google.com, gstatic.com, maybe something else that makes sense) and one XmlHttpRequest destination like apis.google.com. I've done it enough that I'm able to sort of robotically respond with that sequence of steps, and then prove that I'm not a robot.

 

Yeah I just tried it, and for West Coast Canada, in CDN $'s, it was $85.45 all-in. And that IS all-in, no taxes or duty extra when I ordered. $85.45 CDN currently converts to $68.36 USD.


That approx delivery of July 15th is optimistic...

In my case, it wouldn't even give me a CAPTCHA (which I think is an issue inherent in Safari), so I just bailed.

 

Since the block is the same in the Corrolla, why not check a junk yard and take it off one those engines?

exactly! No leaks, very tight and no law suits makes logical sense for them to do that. And when the car owner can’t loosen it up, you get a returning customer. Great marketing strategy.

 

It's sealed with an O ring! It could be loosened 2½ turns and still not leak.

 

Sadly, most shops overtighten everything. They just don't care, it's not there car.
And if they brake it, then the shop pays for it, most of the time.
When you do your own work, you're more careful.
I've only tightened my oil filter housing with a 3/8, 6 inch SnapOn ratchet, and put the clip bad.
It's never been hard to remove with a 3/8 braker bar.

 

Yep, even dealerships! My daughter had her Sienna serviced (oil change) and the retard junior mechanic must've used the air wrench when he reinserted her plastic cartridge on the filter....I did her next oil change and now need to buy a replacement. (I've ordered an aluminum one and she's to let me do her servicing from now on.)

 

Go one better, teach HER how to change her oil and filter!
