Oil Change Only at Dealership?

Maybe so, but they ought to be able to get a good seal reliably without crushing the filter if the part contacting at least one end of the filter is appropriately spring-loaded. That would also reduce the need for tight tolerances on the length of the filter.

Hmm, now that you mention it, one end probably is spring loaded already as that would be the pressure relief valve. But since it has resist normal engine oil pressure, it's probably strong enough to crush the filter a bit.

One thing is for sure, looking around the web this is a problem with many cartridge filters. For example: Napa Gold 7082 (by Wix) | Engine Oil Filters | Bob Is The Oil Guy.
