Oil change cost

I did think about it, running out of the 5 year component of the drivetrain warranty, but you know: costs me about $30 spring and fall, and keeps me off the streets, lol.

 

i see, but it sounds like a waste of good oil. at those intervals you could switch to dino 5W20 oil or honda 0W20 blend.

 

Honda 0W20 is $9something per liter, at our local Honda dealership. Toyota: $5.91.

I walk the used oil, empty bottles, and the filter (wrapped in a used nitrile glove) down a path to a nearby Mr Lube. I catch the used oil in a big (reusable) container with large funnel attached, so there's no extra bottle to deal with.

And hey, Toyota told me to. It is funny: head way up north to Alaska, and you're back on the US schedule, lol.

In the meantime? Mother Nature can hand me a new filter, it's time to change my oil.

 

And you'll change your oil by driving up on a curb near a storm drain, remove the drain bolt and let 'er rip. Tidy up by mopping up the area with a handy bald eagle.

It's cheaper to buy the synthetic oil at Walmart on Sale for ~5 dollars per quart, and then take it to the dealer. Labor charge is only $20. Filter is about 5.

So about 45 dollars total.

 

This. My local dealer charges even less than that. I get my 0W20 at Wallymart in the larger container for around mid $20's. They seem to not even use all of the container too.

 

Here's the deal: The oil change shop is charging for 5 quarts. Even if your car only uses 3-and-half quarts, you are still paying for five.

So you can save some money by pre-purchasing exactly what you need. (And you can save even more money by waiting for Walmart sales. I just acquired high-quality Mobil 1 for only 4.50 a quart.)

 

You need to call around, no Toyota dealer here in the North Atlanta area is over $50.00 for oil change,and with a $20 coupon it was even better

 

If they're charging for 5 quarts are they giving you 1/2 quart left over?

Our dealership does bulk oil changes. I've never used them, always DIY, but I'd speculate they'd write it up as 4.2 litres (4.5 quarts). I've seen their shop: they use graduated pitchers for oil.

 

That's the way my dad used to do it! Except bunny rabbits' fur grabs the oil better than eagle feathers.

 

I just got myself 5 quarts of mobil1 synthetic oil for $15 after rebates. Bought car at 25k miles, and I think changing at 30k makes sense since I don't know when the oil was last changed.

If you don't know when (if) the oil was changed last, probably better off putting new oil in the car now than letting it sit in the jug!

At least once, I've just about put the oil filter housing back on without the filter. You can't trust anyone, lol.

I would welcome a fool-proof design, say some mechanism that would prevent the housing from being screwed back on without a filter inside.

 

They call that an oil filter. Where there is no housing. For a Prius, you replace the filter cartridge. Not sure of the pluses and minuses of the designs, but the Prius set up is more complicated to change, weighs more, and has more parts than a regular filter.

 

Still, it's easier to recycle, being just an (oil soaked) paper element. I'm sure there'd be a way, to make it goofproof.

 

But you can easily inspect it for defects before or after use, and easily see how much and what sort of debris it has captured (except the microscopic stuff).
