Oil change cost

My dealer has never charged me more than $24 to do the oil service at every 10K miles, including a new Toyota filter. I bring in my own 5qts of 0w20 that I buy at Wallymart for ~$26.

 

Is that for Mobil 1 oil?

 

Yes. Or $27. Price seems to be different every time I go.

My name's Ruben and i am a new member. I just bought a certified used 2012 prius. I am about to do an oil change and like the other member said, i got a quote from a local guy for an oil change for $65 + $10 for a filter change + tax. I was like wow...
Then i called a toyota dealer on the phone and he said that it'll cost $65. Then i called another toyota dealer that said it costs $39 + tax.
That's a big price difference between these toyota dealers. Is this normal? Do you think they are referering to different types of oil?
I'd appreciate any thoughts on this.

At least in Canada, Greater Vancouver area, I can get Toyota 0W20 through the dealership parts dept for $5.63 per liter. 4.2 liters (4.4 US qts) will put it on the top mark of dipstick. The oil filter (with replacement O-Ring) is $8.53 and the drain bolt washer 98 cents. All values Canadian dollars. With taxes, assuming I'm just purchasing 4 liters of the oil, that's $35.97.

If they're charging $65~75 to change it, that sounds reasonable. The $39 guy may be hoping to talk you into a bunch of extras while you're there. Or not, hard to tell.

Bottom line, I wouldn't sweat the amount, the quality of the place is more important.

 

Guessing that the last one was planning to use standard and not synthetic. Perhaps the others were quoting synthetic.

All just speculation though.

Recommend you invest in ramps and a jack (and maybe a funnel, a socket set and an oil filter wrench) and plan to do your own oil changes. Mobil 1 synthetic is about $28 for 5 qts. at your local discount store. A Wix filter can be had for <$8 at the parts store. Your first change will cost more, but each one after will cost way less. You'll be confident it's done right and you'll become familiar with the other working components on your car - all of which can be repaired or replaced by you more cheaply and with greater assurance of proper completion than taking it to any dealer or shop that you are not intimately familiar with. Next you can save $50 on replacing your air filter and cabin air filter (both available online). Then maybe you will monitor your battery life more carefully and learn to replace that. Etc, etc.

It's a worthwhile investment in yourself. I wish I had learned it earlier in my life.

 

Is that in the Chicago area? Dealers around Southern California are quoting about $45 if I bring in my own synthetic oil. Anyone in Orange County or the Inland Empire have any dealer recommendations?

 

Well, I was just in Canadian Tire and Mobil 1 0W20 is $50.+ for the 4.4 l container (full of new oil, of course). That's Canadian dollars. My last batch of oil came from the dealer parts dept. as it was less expensive. Looks like I'll be getting another case from them. Still got lots of filters and washers, though I don't usually change the washer. Listen to me (usually), this will be only the third oil change for Pearl S. Got to get some latex gloves though.

 

One of the best things I have read on here, seriously, esp. the last two sentences!

But, regarding latex gloves, please, everyone, use Nitrile, first a significant percentage of chemicals destory/seep through latex. Nitrile offers much better protection. For oil changes alone, latex is O.K., but if you are buying a box of gloves and anticipate using them on any number of other household purposes, nitrile are going to give you much more peace of mind -- ie -- solvents, pesticides, herbicides, birth control...

Also, a fair number of people develop latex allergies....

 

So from what I am gathering from this ...
1. Oil change at the dealer cost $69.99-$75.99 for 0W20 full synthetic oil and they check all your other fuilds and rotate your tires.
2. Using 0W20 you only need to change your oil every 10k

Yes, @ Elmhurst Toyota. In fact, if I bring in an oil change coupon from them, or another local Toyota dealer, the service will likely be even less than I mentioned. I have never had major work done on the car, as it has never needed anything extensive. They may very well make up for the low service prices down the road.

 

They know they get you in there for an hour or so, with nothing to do but look at the new cars. THAT'S worth -MONEY-!!!

 

Thanks for clearing that up but now I have another question ... If Toyota knows you would only need to change the oil every 10k why dose the maintenance warning come on at 4500 miles ? Is that there for people that are not using the 0W20 ?

 

should be 5k light, it's not an oil change light, it's a maintenance light. you'll rotate tyres and inspect a fe things every 5k, plus cabin filter at 15 and 45k.

I use Amsoil synthetic, so I know I pay more for oil, but I change it myself. The cost isn't a factor since I've gone Amsoil in all my vehicles by choice. Frankly, the decent OTC synthetics cost almost as much, so I'd not save a lot of money.

 

My son and I changed the oil on his car yesterday. It takes 3.2 liters (Civic Hybrid), and no oil filter change this time. Using Toyota 0W20 oil at $5.91 per liter, pretty cheap. But then he took us out to dinner, defeats the purpose of the whole thing, lol.

 

1. Look online for specials. I just got mine done this weekend at the dealer (0w20, filter, tires rotated, multipoint inspection) for $50. I'm sure it would have been higher if I hadn't quoted the online price when I called.

2. Depends on your driving conditions. We go through harsh winters and do a fair amount of short under 5 mile trips around town. So every 7,500 miles for us.
