Oil Catch Can, Eliminate that knock!

    I was looking at that one...
    It looks pretty good, but do you have any complaints? The price difference is made up by not having to buy a pack of brass filters and a tap (to make what Danlatu did). It also has a drain outlet on the bottom. Maybe you could screw in another homemade canister below it for extra capacity (something like a 500ml steel canister that low BP liquids are shipped in from chemical suppliers). I want to mount mine low, but not have to check it regularly, if possible.

    I haven’t installed it yet as life has been full of opportunities :cool:.

    The Prime engine bay is slightly different and I haven’t rooted around enough to determine what placement will work;).

    But when I do, I’ll post up the results with pics (y).

    Hey, apologies if I don't read through the 71 pages, I read a lot here and there. Is there any conclusion what is the best to hold the OCC? I wish I had a 3D printer, I don't, so anything that proven to be working, I would be glad to hear! I'm gonna do tomorrow. And thanks for all the useful info here! I was also thinking to put it closer, but if @danlatu says length does not really matter, I'm fine with the usual spot.

    I don't think so. There was an optimum location for me, but that depended on my priorities. Some of my priorities might have been a bit misguided too, but for what it's worth:

    1. I wanted to keep the hoses runs short, and had a "hunch" that if the hoses ran down it might help.
    2. Having an OCC with a bottom drain spigot, I was figuring that mounting low, I could synchronize draining with oil changes.
    3. The top of the engine bay is very crowded. Again, mounting low, below the intake manifold, there's a fair volume that's empty.
    4. Down at the bottom of that volume is a cross beam: I chose to mount a short section of slotted angle atop that with the upstanding leg to the rear, and bolted my OCC (it came with a mounting ring) there. I found subsequently that the connection of the slotted angle to the cross beam has to have some "give", or it will stress whenever you use the front/central jacking point.
    5. I didn't think much about it at the time, but in hindsight: if I pop the hood now, I see no evidence of an OCC. It's only looking very close, through a gap, I can see something shiney, down low. This keeps the car looking "stock", and in some jurisdictions might help you pass a smog inspection.

    In CA & some other states, you won't pass state inspection for registration renewal if engine is modified w/an OCC.

    Good catch, I did that after that, but did not take a new photo. So far after 500 miles, no sign on the OCC dip stick.. But noticeable better mpg and the engine shuttering/rattling on low RPM is also gone.(y)

    Is it actually necessary to remove the windshield wiper panel to remove the EGR cooler? I would love to skip that step if possible.

    That is the warm up task before you dive into it, so your back won't hurt (that much)! :)

    Absolutely necessary.
    Leaves and debris build up in the tray, so it needs cleaning (if you park near trees).

    I’ve done te egr cooler removal with the windshield wiper cowling still there;).

    It takes 3 times as long and is much more fiddly:cool:.

    Take the 20 minutes to remove it and you’ll thank yourself later:).

    That is unless you like to challenge yourself (y).

    OK, looks like I'll be removing it.

    One last question, has anyone found a decent Home Depotish bracket solution for mounting their top-sided OCC?

    I purchased the ESpeeder OCC from Amazon with two vertical mount bolt holes (sorry I'm too new to post a link).

    I was hoping something like a 4-inch corner brace (or some other brace with matching bolt holes) could be used to mount it using an existing hole (or two) in the frame.

    I've seen the 3D printed solutions but I don't have time to get that done since I have to sell my old car ASAP and need the Prius back in commission.

    I could only find hot pink!

    Here's what I've got so far...the 2-inch corner brace will be bolted into the empty hole that is typically used for the 3D printed solution.

    Anyone have a better idea using off-the-shelf parts that may make it easier to check/drain?

    Also, I'm not sure about height, it looks like there is more room for hoses the higher you go, but I don't want to run into hood clearance issues.
