Haven’t put one in the 2017. With the egr changes in the gen 4 the jury seems to still be out on whether it’s required.

Check/empty it every gas tank or week of driving. In the winter/cold, you will find more water than oil.

Has anyone tried putting a fuel line filter in place of, or in addition to, the OCC? I know @danlatu was experimenting with a brass filter that screwed onto the outlet from inside the can (see posts #622, #632, #650, and #652 of this thread) in an effort to catch any additional oil/water, etc. I've seen a couple different types of filters on Amazon that look interesting and could be spliced in the outlet hose from the OCC.

I'm leery of anything that could be slowly clogging. I guess an OCC could also do that, but I suspect it's not that common: the OCC action is to cause oil vapors to condense and be retained, without clogging the through passage.

A filter, on the other hand, is the ONLY way through, and if/when it starts clogging it's going to cause problems.

In danlatu's #632 post, he talks about using a filter on the outlet of the can to the Intake Manifold. Isnt' that pretty much what this would do? It would eliminate the need for a 3/8 #18 NPT tap, which I don't have.

Something else that has been done is to put a couple of catch cans in series: the second scavanges what the first missed. I think Moroso even sells a setup for this, using a couple of it's compact cans, together with a bracket, customized for different car applications.

I'm doing an oil catch can install with my son on his new Mazda CX-5. Well, trying to: we managed to pull the intake manifold up and away enough for access, only to find the hose between the PCV valve and the intake manifold was 1/2" inside diameter (with a slight flare-out at the PCV end).

So we buttoned everything thing up, but left the myriad wiring harness unclipped, they are a total pain, so many of them. Nothing is shifting/rattling, car running fine.

We still have to finalize the OCC mount location, but very likely similar to what a lot people are doing on the Prius, at the top, in the right/front corner. There's some vertical sheet metal flanges there that hopefully work with the Moroso 85474 vertical mount style bracket.

But anyway, just wanted to say, after pulling my hair out for about 12 hours looking for adapters/fittings, anything that would make the transition from 1/2" ID to 3/8", I went to my old standby from steel detailing days, McMaster Carr:

I've never done an order from them before, they don't disclose shipping or duty, so hopefully don't get murdered. I've heard good things about them, trying to think good thoughts. Their website is phenominal, so organized easy to find what you want. Even so you need to be on your toes, but way ahead of the other rabble.

We use them all the time where I work:).

    Easy peazy ;).

How much have you collected in your 2010 Prius OCC?

So far all I’ve gotten in ours is about 4-6 ounces in 13 k miles. Was thinking about doing one on the RX450h, but at that level, might not be worth it.

    Keep on truckin(y).

Our motivation is mostly: the CX-5 is direct injection, doesn't get gasoline washing the intake valves. Yeah I think we'll get there, we've done the exploratory incursion.

    IIRC I got 100 cc in 4000 kilometers. That's maybe 3.5 oz's?

Did some math: column one is my results, column two is converted to US, and column three is extrapolating to 14K miles, at the same rate of collection.

    Hello Guys,

I want to install an OCC as preventive maintenance. I have 50K on my PIP. Just saw this on ebay and no one here runs one. What do you think. Its cheaper than the Rubin. Props to danlatu and nutzaboutbolts for your amazing posts.

I am new so I cant post links. Here is the ebay listing item2845a75025

Here is pictures of the OCC. Looks like it will catch water. Plus its glass so you can visually check it. Figured I would share this and see you the members think

Looks good to me, as long as you can find a place to mount it, I don’t see anything wrong with it.

Why not just design it to NOT allow oil into the intake?????
Then you wouldn't matter where the fuel is injected. :)

They would have to remove the egr and pcv system to remove oil and carbon deposits from the intake manifold to accomplish this task. Unfortunately it is a CARB and EPA rule that requires these devices on our vehicles. It solves one problem by introducing another problem. Burning oil vs releasing the fumes into the atmosphere seems to be the same thing in my opinion. Fossil fuels are on it's way out the door along with all their problems. Electric powered cars will dominate the market in coming years. Lithium-ion, lithium-cobalt, lithium-polymer, sodium-ion, hydrogen etc. very exciting times are ahead of us.

Gas car will be around for a LONG time.
Anytime the government gets involve it just creates problems.
Just plant more trees and they'll take care of any extra emissions. :)

Hi Dan,you mentioned there are many designs of PCV valve at the top of engine valve cover like the GS-R or older corolla engines, is there an attempt to relocate the PCV valve to the valve cover to avoid the valve sucking in oil from the crank on these Gen 3’s?

Yes I have thought of reversing the flow of the pcv system, I actually bought a spare valve cover. I was thinking of putting a pcv on the valve cover and then push the supply air in the lower block where the existing pcv is. I have been so busy with work and racing on weekends have kept me from wrenching on anything.

What about holding hands and singing kumbyyall?
So how will the Obama train survive? It's 74 billion dollars behind, they have to keep jacking up gas prices and registrations so gas cars might just disappears in Cal first.
