Looks like a very effective can.

I am happy to report that I was able to do the job....or most of the job, today. I wound up not taking off the EGR cooler. I can leave that for another day but I was able to...

    1) Remove the Throttle Body and Intake Manifold and clean everything really well, including the sensor.
    2) Clean the EGR Pipe and as far up into the EGR as I could.
    3) Install a new PCV and a long line, so when I figure out where to mount the OCC I just have to cut it.

You guys weren't kidding about the coolant. I got a face full. :-( But no harm I got it back on quick...pulled just a little too hard before clamping it.

The result seems to be good! I notice less hesitation and more responsiveness and it didn't knock when I started it. I hope it gets cold or damp tonight because it was like 80 degrees here today.

Thanks everyone for the help! It was easier than I expected. Nutz About Bolts video is awesome. I would like to add that I found 4 little holes at the very edge of the intake ports and ran a brush in them...really nasty stuff came out and it seemed to drain to the EGR Pipe.

How many miles on it? look into EGR circuit too, check @NutzAboutBolts videos. Apologies if I'm repeating myself, can't recall what all's transpired so far. :)

Nothing has transpired so far. Purchased the car with just over 100k and knew I should execute EGR, intake manifold cleaning, and OCC install ASAP. Just was waiting for it to get a bit warmer. (still snow in the forecast here)

Could this make a good oil separator? Google this BMW part No: 11 15 1 705 237 (I've ordered one for UK £9.99 from eBay)

    I went with this:

    Moroso 85474 Universal Air/Oil Separator

It's working fine, very well built, and has a tap on the underside, so you can incorporate drain with oil changes. It is not cheap though. :(

Looks like it might separate o.k. and then you need to drain it into something. One of the good features of the can is that it contains the residue, sort of an all in one unit.

I'm wondering if the cyclone action would make it more efficient. It's cheap enough I think I'll give it a try.

A though ran into my mind. What do you people think of running two oil catch can. I made my own little homemade occ. but i still found oil in the intake manifold. Not much just some drops of oil.

There was a YouTube, a guy comparison testing two different cans, he would put them in series, one in the lead, then the other, to see which "scavenged" better. I'll. see if I can find it later, pretty interesting.

Also Morosso for one sells some pair configurations, two small cans on a bracket in series.

Here is a thread with some ideas for secondary filtering with a catch can. Just for some perspective...

Yeah he's pretty painstaking. The RX Performance definitely came out ahead in the scavenge test. I'm happy with my Moroso though, like the look/build, the mounting system, and the tap on the bottom: easy to drain when doing an oil change from below.

The RX looks to come with a more generous amount of quality black rubber fuel hose (3/8" ID, SAE-30R7), compared to the Moroso (think I got maybe 3.5 feet?), but that was enough for my install below, and you can pick that hose up at local automotive specialty stores, for maybe $1.50 per foot.

My understanding is the Elite Ex-2 can is cheaper and has the same internals as the RX.
