Oil Catch Can, Eliminate that knock!

    Got my OCC several weeks ago. It is waiting in my garage. It will go in shortly. I plan on doing several maintenance work staring this week.
    I got the Ruien (Black) from Amazon. Plan on getting different hoses (either vacuum or fuel line)

    I had some troubles with the attachment, fixed it now. But the point I was trying to make: there's nothing to see.

    The OCC is under the air box, mounted on lower cross beam. Note: if you mount thus, you want to use some sort of flexible mount, rubber washers (and lock nuts) for example, between the cross beam and anything you bolt to it, since that beam is the front jacking point, and flexes some when used thus.

    The OCC is a Moroso which has spigot and tap on underside, which is practical as long as you're doing regular DIY oil changes, at not too long of an interval, and taking the engine underpanel off. A few more illustrative pictures, repeats from earlier in this thread:

    It's a sheet metal tube beam, with a depth of maybe 1.5". The bottom (luckily) has some openings, and it is just possible to sneak bolts in from the underside, and restrain them with a box wrench or socket (depending) and spin nuts on from above. That's what I did, but it was definitely not easy. And it'll be a pain to modify or whatever.

    Better would be a RivNut, something like this:



    Theoretically you need a cumbersome tool to install these, but there are work arounds:

    I first solidly bolted the slotted angle to the top of the beam, and the next time I jacked up the front I heard all sorts of complaining, finally realized it was underside of that beam I was jacking on, not good. So I removed everything, put rubber washers in the interface. I then installed a first nut, just finger-tight, and a second nut was torqued against the first, effectively a lock nut.

    Fishing bolts through from the underside was a struggle though. Doing it again, I think I'd try to get some rivnuts and install them via the "close quarter" method described in the second link.

    I just might do a blind rivet or self tapping screw for a bracket then rubber washer between the can holder bracket attached on the can

    Yeah self-tapping screw sounds good, it really doesn't need to be as strong as what I used. It was a bit exciting, drilling 3/8" diameter through holes, way down in there. With self tapping screws definitely drill a pilot hole. If you were to use an angle similar to mine, I'd be inclined to just put a full rubber gasket under it, drill through it. It's tricky aligning small rubber washers.

    With the slotted angle I used I could have wrapped a couple of zip-ties around the beam and the horizontal leg, and put a layer of rubber sheet between the angle and beam. Lots of ways to secure (loosely) to that beam, and I zeroed in on the toughest one, of course. :rolleyes:

    You could always zip tie it until you’re sure of what and where you want it:

    I liked the idea of cutting the original hone in half(y) I could probably be doing the same (give that it is still in good shape after 145k miles).

    I'm thinking if/when I remove the OCC, say trading in, I'd just bring the two cut halfs together, connect with a hose splice barb. A new hose is not that expensive online from the States, but shipping would kill me, and locally through parts department the price was pretty high IIRC.

    Found it before, have this in my notes:

    Connector hose between pcv valve and intake manifold:
    HOSE, VENTILATION p/n: 12261-37060

    Putting that part number into mcgeorge Toyota search:

    But I had a hard time finding it, searching through their "tree" system. Forget how I found it.

    Also...I need to take care of my intake manifold on our Prius v as soon as possible ( see my thread in the Prius v main forum ). While I am in there...I am toying with installing a 'loop' of tubing in preparation for the OCC install at a later date. Anyone see a problem with that?

    You can buy it anywhere other than dealer's part counter and save money:)

    Checked my email request to local dealership, not bad, considering Canadian dollars too:

    $14.19 and I can have it here over night.

    I'd probably go that route, not cheap out and put in the splice.

    Maybe repurpose that useless hose that comes in the OCC kit? Find a member or a hole in which to thread that thin tube around and make a lasso for the OCC?

    I like having it's weight supported though. The Moroso's fairly heavy, and hanging it might be stressing the connections at PCV valve and intake. The hose that came with mine was heavy duty spec., not much though, just a bit over 3' IIRC. Enough for my install, but they did kinda cheap out: 6' would be better.

    That's what I mean, Macgyver it, supporting the weight with the collapsible hose that comes with the kit. Then connecting to quality hose. Tongue-in-cheek
