Oil Catch Can, Eliminate that knock!

    Checking the level isn't sufficient for me as far as confirmation goes. Unless you do a proper check, you can't rule it out 100%. Not that I don't trust you or question your intelligence, it's just that in my experience more often than not when I hear people adamant about not having leaks they have leaks that aren't obvious. Not that that would explain all the oil consumption, I just don't "feel right" writing it off as a possibility yet.

    Toyota has installed more than their fair share of bad water pumps in the past decade or so. And it can fly under the radar because they sometimes fail kind of intermittently or halfway instead of outright. This happened in my Lexus early on, like 40k miles. Engine was running hot but not enough to trigger a light or cause alarm.

    What would you like to see to verify the head gasket is still good:whistle:?

    As a chemical engineer, I have done my fair share of material balancing;).

    Since I am not seeing oil in the coolant and no coolant in the oil and the coolant level is stable, what else would be proof of stability?

    While the oil level is decreasing and having 174 k miles on our Prius, oil consumption is not uncommon. So I’m managing it:).

    Open to your suggestions (y).

    My suggestion is to address issues properly.

    To repeat, assuming no coolant leak, a possible next step would be to verify proper circulation.

    Hello Everyone!

    With the Install of your OCC, has anyone noticed that one of the lines is collapsing while the engine is running?
    Just confirmed this with another owner of an OCC - one hose was stiffer(heat) and the other hose was soft and started collapsing when the engine was at idle.

    Interesting, I never checked with the ICE running/idling, I will look into this when possible.

    Interesting indeed.

    There is a fair amount of vacuum at idle. I would imagine the best way to replicate the hose collapse would be after a long (ish) drive so the system is at temperature, then check the hoses at idle when vacuum is highest.

    I'll be checking into this.

    I notice a lot of people using clear, braided hoses, maybe they're not as strong. My OCC came with black rubber (fuel line I believe), spec is SAE30ER7. With the bit of spare I have, I can kinda pinch it, along it's length, near fully flatten it, but it takes quite a bit of effort.

    Correct. Both of us are using the clear braided hose that comes with the kit. That may contribute to the collapsing of the hose due to the hose not being as thick.

    The Cusco OCC comes with a clear braided hose but looks much thicker and a different material. I will check with the owner to see if there is the same issue.

    It sounds like the hose needs to handle suction, not just pressure. I know for water pumping suction hoses are designed differently.

    I bought right away fuel/oil rated line. Not even thought to put that chinese non fuel oil tube what came with OCC to my car.

    Btw, spring is coming slowly. When temps hits steady over +1C average i put my OCC back for summer.

    Actually when i went to local car part shop and asked if they have this and that size tube what can handle oil and fuel, they asked me ”i guess you are building vacuum line can or something...?” and he knew right away what i needed. It was 5/5.

    If the clear hose is braided, pretty sure that is vacuum rated, but not sure to what level of vacuum.

    Is it collapsing where the hose may have been linked during packaging? That would definitely be a weak point:(.

    Just installed a Ruien style OCC over the weekend so it's too early to tell. I did not use the tubing that came with the OCC. Bought braided tubing from Home Depot. Seems very stiff to the pinch. Biggest concern is metal chafing. (y)

    The hose that came with the Ruien OCC looked flimsy and not so strong. I think there was a kink in it too. Didn't use it. Bought braided tubing from Home Depot. Seems stronger.

    I thought the same of the tubing that came with the Ruien OCC. I did use what they sent, but it wasn't long enough, so I got an additional length of braided vinyl tubing from the hardware store which has the same ID but a much thicker wall and is much more rigid. At my next service, I should probably replace the Ruien supplied tubing with the hardware store stuff.

    In this application, the max pressure will be very minimal -- just slightly over atmospheric pressure -- but the maximum vacuum will be significant. When the engine is at idle -- producing maximum vacuum -- the PCV valve should be shut, meaning all that vacuum is pulling on our OCC tubing.
