Oil Catch Can, Eliminate that knock!

    Well there, now you guys can count me in as OCC owner who installed it because of this thread.
    My car(Auris) shares same system as GEN3 prius. It has 19,5k km's ~ 12k miles on the clock.I have owned it 1/2 year from 11k km clock reading.
    I haven't never got any knock startup, but i have also always made sure that i dont shut down engine before it is warmed where it does it self or stays on because cabin needs heat.
    I drive a lot of short trips 5-10km and weekly also over a hour trips, what i hope to get moisture out of my engine what buids up on short trips.

    Installation took about 2 hours from me, that included emptying room from work to get car in and afterwards putting everything back as it was.
    I would rate installation difficulty to 1/5, very easy, maybe almost safer and easier than changing all the tires. But i've been working 11 years as service engineer installing and repairing all kind a stuff all over europe so my rating may not meet yours :)

    Sadly 3d printed bracket broke, i made temporaly installation for can and next weekend of after that it will be something else what holds the can. Also then i finalize lenght of the tubes.

    Accessing PCV tube is quite easy from top after removing airfilter assembly.

    Edit: i found some mouse sh*it from top of inventer(seen in photos on top of black plate). Wondering if should take my car to dealer and inspected fully since i do not want any mouses living in my engine deparment. But hopefully it was some quick stop and go from mouse since at least now i didnt see any running away.

    Pictures here as i promised. I ended up to buy steel baffle mesh also and added that to OCC.

    Just one question ........
    Wondering why , since you were in that far you didn't remove the intake manifold and the EGR tube to clean it out and or check it ? Just so you knew how much blow by you may have been getting pre OCC install .

    Also, not thats its a problem, you didnt need 2 barb fittings . You could have just attached the the one hose to the pcv valve directly .

    Great job ......another Prius OCC job joins the ranks .
    Hopefully the OCC installs will help to get more Prius to the "hi mileage club") !

    So true, did not even think about putting tube directly to PCV valve, lol :D

    I thought about looking EGR valve and cooler, but then decided that i dont open those since this car has to low miles on the clock.
    Original PCV tube was also totally clean when i took it off, no oil or anything. Just smelled fuel.

    I went that route initially, then cut the original hose and used an extra barb there. The reasons:

    1. It leaves the connection to the PCV valve "stock", relatively easy/quick to disconnect, comparing to an airplane clamp.
    2. I have my OCC directly below, mounted on the cross beam. The (cut half) of the stock hose is a nice elbow.

    If I remove the OCC, say at trade-in, I think I'd just restore the cut hose with a hose barb, put it back as it was.

    Another thought: I have airplane clamps at every hose barb junction, but I really suspect they're overkill. Maybe it was @danlatu who mentioned, the interior of the hoses is virtually always reduced air pressure, partial vacuum, and those hose barbs are crazy tenacious, there's no way they will slip off.

    Another other thought: The Moroso can IS expensive, but one nice perk, it comes with a ring clamp and a mounting bracket, should you need them. I went with just the ring clamp, connecting to a piece of slottted angle, connecting in turn to the top of the lower cross beam. My initial connection of the slotted angle to the cross beam was solid, but that proved problematic: the beam flexes when you raise the front of the car with a jack. I reworked it with rubber washers in the interface and locking nuts.

    Agreed. I didn't use a single clamp. Not on the two barb fittings below or on the connections at the OCC.

    How frquently do you check/empty your OCC? I check mine at least once/week, and to access it from below would seems like an inconvenience.

    I'm thinking I'll be fine, synchronizing OCC drains with my 6 monthly oil changes. I checked it just recently, 2380 kms after install, and mid-Winter, and had about 50 cc. I think winter there's a lot more accumulation? Also, we're putting on under 10,000 kms yearly, that helps, lol.

    Mine has a tap on the bottom, works well from below during oil change.

    That is why I still have the work in progress noted on the file. I have been working on this everyday with the time I have making small adjustments. Nylon, abs, pla etc. filaments all have a shrink rate to it. Different print speeds, hot end, plate temps and infill affect these shrink rates. In the notes I have for the thingiverse file, I have noted that I am using nylon. Nylon is a pain to print with because it does not like to stick to the hot plate without glue. If it lifts during a print, it warps it and I have to start over. It is really time consuming. This upload was for people that have a 3d printer to print. I personally would not pay a third party to print a thing in progress because the file could change and I would not want to pay for the print plus shipping until it is finalized. I should be done with everything today. Thank you for your patience.

    Here is the new hose bracket. It clips in.

    I really like how you went under the inverter bracket(y) I also do not know what kind of prius you have. It looks like a Prius V here in the states. I am not sure if this bracket would fit a Prius C, V or Lexus CT 200H. Your radiator support and headlights are different. That abs bracket would snap in the cold if it is not carefully installed. A lot of plastics are like that in the cold. I am that kid who broke his new rc car Tyco Turbo hopper on christmas morning. Cold weather sucks sometimes.
    Nylon is a bit stronger and will handle temp better. I would like to use peek filament but it is too expensive to print with. I could redesign an intake manifold and bolt parts straight to the engine with this.

    No worries, i didnt pay much from printing so not an issue. But now i know that ABS is difficult to deal with.
    By the way @danlatu , have you noticed that your prius occ picture is at the amazon page what you have linked to your thingiverse page? ;)

    Thanks, there was already block heater wires going so i thought that i do the same and i planned tube route to go downwards from OCC just to avoid any slopes and so on.
    I dont have Prius, i have Auris Touring Sport Hybrid 2014(Toyota Auris - Wikipedia) what shares same hybrid system as Gen3 prius. Or at least i think so.

    Edit: so kind a i may be messing totally in wrong forum section, but based on tech and if it truly is same as gen3 prius i think i can be here dealing this as this is purely under hood stuff and not rest of the car what is different.

    The Moroso ring bracket seems a good idea, having a gap and a bolt to synch it. Would that be possible with 3D printed material, or too much stress considering the material?

    To my eye the Moroso bracket looks to have been machined out of a solid piece of aluminum plate, as opposed to being cast. Must be an incredible pile of shavings for each one? (n)

    For a cobbled solution, I keep thinking something like an airplane clamp and an L-bracket or two.

    You would need to import it unless you just sell to a Canadian and collect a commission. Last I checked, British Columbia was not one of the United States of America.

    It’s worth it for the over maintained aspect and I have a feeling it is a “garage queen” and driven very gently;).

    By the time that happens I’ll need to find a suitable replacement for ours currently at 172 k miles(y).
