Oil Catch Can, Eliminate that knock!

    Yeah strange. Did you say first hose was made in USA?

    IMG_3597.JPG IMG_3598.JPG Installed oil catch can yesterday during our Bay Area Meetup, thank you guys for the directions and helps.

    I read somewhere it is not necessary to remove the intake manifold to install OCC so I gave it a try. Once the intake snorkels and air box was off, I found there is plenty of space for me so I didn't remove the intake manifold, will do the IM cleaning some other time. I kept the original U-Shape hose in one piece, just in case I need to reverse this install. Purchased 10ft braided hose off Amazon and cut it in half so I had 5ft from PCV to OCC and 5 more ft to go from the catch can to the rubber hose via the coupling.

    After putting the air cleaner box and snorkel back on, I routed the hoses around the box, and temporarily letting it hang in the space next to the inverter reservoir with a strap tie. I want to see how much oil it collects so I'm not putting it somewhere hard for me to take the can in and out.

    Hands were somewhat dirty so I didn't take too many photos nor videos. This took me more than an hour, but for some of you, installing oil catch can without removing intake manifold can be done in less than 30 mins.

    I wonder if there will be significant cooling of the fumes in the long run of tubing on the way to the OCC, such that oil will condense out and accumulate along the walls of the tubing before getting to the OCC?

    I do like the below intake manifold location. I've got mine so the hose drops maybe 8" from PCV valve to the OCC, then back up to the manifold.

    It's always something you can play around with, down the road. Time will tell, if the tubing starts to act like a "still".

    After EGV cooler cleaned and occ installed getting great gas mileage. No more knocks.

    I've read through all 18 pages of this thread and I'm still confused. o_O Are there instructions/parts list in one place? Is there any way to avoid having to watch multiple videos? Is there any meetup in Maryland? (y)

    What's confusing? Air in the crankcase runs from the PCV valve to the intake manifold. The object is to put an Oil Catch Can along that route, waylay the oil vapour in that air.

    Where is the PCV valve? And the intake manifold? What is a crankcase? What does it mean to put an oil catch can "along that route, waylay the oil vapour in that air"???

    I suggest picking up a Haynes/Chilton manual for your car and studying the pictures. There are also parts diagrams at the AutoZone and Toyota parts websites.

    Then look at the PC pictures. They're in this thread and a couple others.

    Read up a bit, google the words involved. Study @danlatu pics on page one. Watch @NutzAboutBolts video (pinned in the 3rd gen maintenance forum) on intake manifold cleaning. This'll give you a good idea of what you need to do for acess.

    The PCV valve is on the crankcase wall, just below the intake mainifold, and there's a U-shaped hose running from it to the intake manifold.

    If you're still stumped, I think this is something you'd best avoid.

    This mod is not rocket science; just would take a lot of time to piece together all the comments. I might just pay someone since my time is worth more. Others have mentioned struggling through this thread as well.

    I've replaced the transmission fluid multiple times, done various mods, etc., so I'm perfectly capable so is kind of frustrating no one is willing to write up something in a concise way.

    I wouldn't.

    Installing oil catch can on a lot of North American vehicles is more cut-and-dried. Moroso for one offers car-specific kits, with brackets and complete instruction.

    But with the Prius, you're a pioneer, free to try ideas, innovate, regarding approach, how to install. The concept itself is dead simple, lol.

    What about cleaning the Mass airflow sensor, EGR Pipe/Cooler, throttle body, intake manifold? Does this need to be done as well?

    Off topic: Has anyone done the oil filter conversion? I did it on our 2016 Corolla & as far as I can tell the Prius is the same. I'm going to attempt it after I have gone through my oil filter elements! Oil Filter Conversion | PriusChat

    Also Yes. The install is half-way done here. Cut the white braided tube in half and connect your OCC. Then reconnect that black rubber elbow.


    Yes, yes, yes, yes and yes. To save time you can do these all at once to avoid having to remove the windshield wiper motor assembly and cowl again. Don't forget to clean the PCV valve, MAP sensor, and EGR valve

    So clean the Mass airflow sensor, MAP sensor, EGR Pipe/Cooler/Valve, PCV valve, throttle body and intake manifold? Anything else I should direct my mechanic to do?

    You should try some of those yourself, zero expense, and less chance of screw-up. I didn't change any gaskets, and all seems fine. Watch the videos first, get comfortable with pulling things off, acquire tools as needed.

    An E8 Torx socket is needed for the EGR cooler removal, an E6 if you want to take the throttle body hold-down studs off the intake manifold. For intake manifold removal for cleaning you don't need to disconnect the throttle body coolant lines. You also need a decent collection of sockets, wrenches, extensions, pliers, a low-range torque wrench.

    For EGR cooler cleaning you will need to disconnect coolant lines, but pre-draining a couple of liters of engine coolant (at the radiator drain spigot, into a clean receptacle), and then lifting the cooler carefully out and tipping any remaining coolant into the same receptacle, you won't lose a drop. You can just pour it back into the reservoir after.

    For the MAF and MAP sensors use MAP sensor cleaner. For throttle body: carb cleaner. For EGR cooler: strong/hot solution of OxyClean, multiple, hour long soaks. For EGR valve and intake manifold: brake cleaner.

    The attachments are specific to 3rd gen hatchback, hopefully similar enough to be helpful.

    Can I install the catch can without cleaning everything? My mileage is under 40K. Having a hard time finding a mechanic who will do it.

    And where do you connect the black rubber elbow? I know it's the intake manifold, but where is it in the picture? Is it what is called the ventilation hose or the fuel vapor feed hose or somewhere else?
