i live in coastal Mississippi where we don’t really get cold winters. The summer now is getting into the high 90s almost 100s. My car is running perfect with 0-20 but I’ve never deviated from that. Do you think my engine would benefit from a synthetic 5-30. Currently at 156k miles right now.

.........Don't know your Prius C history, but 35k mile spark plug life seems too short.....

I agree, I am biting my nails with that car. As soon as I can get a week of vacation will check the EGR.

....20 weight oil came out for thing and one thing only that’s to be more fuel efficient...

I live in South Texas, for practical purposes winter is nowadays in February for about a week and it will get down to -5C and all else is simply 110F =)

Ok! I can't quite find any differences between the engine for a 09 and a 14 Prius C on the side of the internals that depend on the oil to work (spark-plugs, water pump, etc are outside that set) so 5w-30 will be, now to attempt to find prices lol

    THANK YOU for your responses!

I've been running Motul 0w-40 since purchasing the car nearly 80k miles ago along with using the Redline D6 transmission fluid. I went back to 0w-20 once and noticed the engine sounded louder on startup. I've been very happy with my wear numbers using 0w-40 so I'll stick with it.

I've been using 0W-30 for since 100K on the car. Sitting at just under 166K now. No issues, no oil consumption over 15k intervals, no discernable effect on fuel economy. I'm in MA, so significantly colder winters then you, but see the same high temps in summer, just for not as long.

If you short the trip car a lot, it might not be worth a thicker weight. If you don't, it won't hurt to go to a 30wt, especially as the miles increase.

Its interesting, but virgin oil analysis don't tell you as much as you might think. For instance 80 ppm trinuclear molybdenum may be more effective than 800 ppm molybdenum disulfide, but they are both just counted as "moly" by Blackstone.

I've started using Motul in my new rebuilt engine. Are you still doing 5K OCI or have you extended it to 7.5K or 10K miles?

That was a lot of great data! Thanks to Luis!

Why don't you like that, Grit?

So it's about engine oil instead of ATF.
So, you could suggest that it also be posted in other threads about engine oil, instead of the snark.

But then,,, you have your personal brand to maintain....:(

    Hello!

I am down to my last 3 90915-10003 filters and one 90915-20004. The goal is to find a filter with similar performance. Is there a thread related to this? Any suggestions on how I should order used oil analysis with particulate counts in mind??

On another note.... RedLine 5W-30 15304 did stop oil consumption on my 09. I did do an engine clean first. It does quiet down the engine very much as you drive! The wifes 14 started to sound much better in a few months of 0W-20.
For me the sound levels changed: First 1000 super (erie) quiet, then for another 1000 it will make a bit of noise, then it will begin to quiet down again. The baseline to compare is Mobil EP. That oil was used always in all my vehicles until last year. For me that oil did not work.

Any suggestions on where I should post info or questions about the 90915-10003,10004,20004 oil filters? It's not an item that only applies to a GEN2 or a Prius C =)

Just use the factory filter. Its a good quality filter has the proper bypass valve.

Hello! I do agree: In the OEM filter 90915-10003,10004,20004 versions the filtering media was made out of a sponge type material. So far I have not found any data related to those filters. Have you seen any data "out there" by any chance where somebody tested any of those filters? The new OEM version is pleated media and I am wondering if it "does the same" and I am trying to figure out what that means.

Moving forward Baldwin has a online selector where the filters can be selected based on micron ratings. So far they are the only ones posting that info wide open. If you cross reference the 10003 you get a filter that allows for larger particle size to pass, and the 20004 equivalent has smaller pores: B243. The B243 fits just fine: Same thread and it will seal perfectly on the engine block filter base, it is longer.

Its a very small motor. Its a very clean running motor if you run synthetic oil. Whats all the fuss about oil filters? Make a fuss the other direction and run very high quality oil.

lol I agree & I did make a fuss with the oil. I am grateful that you insisted with Red-Line!
Check out the B243 oil filter and the specs. Very quietly these guys are making a 12 micron nominal filter., 30 absolute You can find it for $5.00, what do you think? I appreciate your comments!

    Lol...alright!!!

The G2 Prius loves Redline motor oil its the only oil on the market that will quiet down the solid lifters. I ran that oil 10-30 for over 15 years and sold my G2 after 15 years of ownership and she still ran great and did not eat oil. That ZDDP pack really makes all the difference.

That's all I run in all my cars. I never see any engine issues whatsoever on any of my cars.

Here's what 15 years of Redline looks like in a Prius. You get what you pay for.

Those pictures convinced me last year. It is true that 0W-20 oil was made for the sake of conserving energy. I have to admit that I felt a bit chicken with using 10W-30 in the G2 engine, I did use 5W-30 in the Prius C engine and that is as far I can go lol. In both cases I did see an improvement. Last year I found out that I was burning engine oil in the G2 because of a misfire code. the engine had lost about 1 1/2 quarts of oil. To make a long story short the 5W-30 redline oil fixed that problem. The G2 still burns a tad of oil, If I try to put a number to it maybe it is about 1/8 of a quart in 5K miles & the misfire codes are definitely gone. I am very happy with those results. The Prius C is not burning oil at all. I am no longer using Mobil 1 EP in any of my vehicles.

I did place small rare earth magnets on the top of the filter, got them at ebay. Small enough to fit between the tiny inlet holes in the filter's face plate, have been using those magnets for a while in all the oil filters I service. With RedLine I can see that the magnets collect less ferric powder. I wish I had better ways to quantify that =) That's my poor mans test. I am hesitant to do a test on the oil because I am not sure if those results are going to meant something to me =) I can't quite spare cash right now. In the long run, RedLine helps me save plenty of money.

I have just used my last Toyota WS quarts (bought them by the case of course), next oil change will be RedLine fluid. At some point 2 years from now will do that change.

    Gratzi!
