Sort of like a hybrid Venza, but more bitched out? I could go for that. I love sport wagons.

 

And Toyota is dropping the Venza.

 

But it and the Crosstour were bulked up to become crossovers, because Toyota and Honda weren't willing to risk marketing them as what they really were; a Camry wagon and Accord hatchback.

Perhaps they aren't their biggest sellers in the States, but the European brands seem to have no trouble calling a wagon a wagon without scaring away all the customers. Cadillac might even be able to do so.

 

Calling a vehicle a truck instead of a wagon gave it an advantage for cafe - the SUV loophole accidentally put in the 1970s, but continued until recently. The SUV loophole is finally filled in 2025, with partial filling between now and then. Europeans have other strangeness like advantages for diesel and lower displacement for taxation.

That may mean around 2021 we start to see station wagons again, but only if the cafe rules aren't rolled back. The cute ute (rav4, cr-v, escape,equinox) have taken over for wagons in the US.

Subaru outback looks like its the best selling wagon in the US, but less than half of the sales of a cute ute.

I call SUVs tall wagons. Pennsylvania calls them station wagons with the attending lower registration fee.

 

I've read in an auto magazine: someone at Toyota Europe said the company is preparing a Prius+ platform to be launched within one year.

 

weren't we hearing prius plus roomers with the gen4 last year?

 

This is very recent (two weeks the most), because Toyota source was talking about TNGA.
Let wait and see.

 

If toyota keeps the prius +/prius v aka prius wagon its going to be based ton the prius which is of course using the TNGA platform. If they don't redesign on this platform then manufacturing gets expensive, so redesign on the platform, or killing the model are the two choices. It sounds like most of the engineering has been done, but production has not been green lighted.

 

A minority, and yet here we are! Tons of under 15 mile trips, and a strong dislike for funding terrorist nations with gasoline purchases. The PiP is for me all the way.

 

From a little over 2 months ownership of a PIp:

I get like 9'ish miles EV without any heat, air conditioning, or lights on.

I get get less than 9 miles EV range with just the headlights on.

I havnt tried the EV range with the heat or air conditioning on because I am in california (mild weather).

My co-worker also has a PIP and gets gets the same, 9'ish miles EV.

I am amazed you can get 15 miles on EV.

Morning commute is largely downhill, about 13 miles. I get some good regen on the long downhills. Cold weather has reduced EV to about 10-11 miles but I do use heat. The EV estimated mileage is notoriously inaccurate on my PiP. Of course the evening commute is always like 44 mpg mostly uphill.

 

I'm in for that....although, toyo might decide on using the existing Camry platform----bigger than a prius v, but a tad smaller than the nixed Venza.

Still, a nice sized hybrid wagon, with a third row potential. Tweak it with a sporty face and nice person, a few upgrades, and it might be a nice seller and big competition for the Sportwagen, Mazda 3, Ford fiesta, etc...

 

the prius c seems to sell quite well in northern california, but I rarely see a v.

There is evidence of RAV4 eating Prius v sales. I would observe the Highlander and RAV4 are the only two with all wheel drive (AWD) and the Prius v is due for an upgrade. We know the Gen-4 Prius has an AWD option in Japan but not the USA market. This may be the trick for the USA market, AWD option.

Now the Prius v has the old-style, less efficient body, old-style transaxle, and lacks the fuel mixture sensor. But if it had AWD, it would provide an nice transition between the abysmal RAV4 MPG and stellar Gen-4 Prius. Then add AWD to the USA options, and Toyota has a nice, broad spectrum approach.

Dont know why people compare a rav4 to a prius v..... Prius v is an economic wagon car and rav4 is a small truck who do 32 MPG they are two different animal. I would never have bought or considerer a rav4 for me it is a truck not a car.....

 

Because for most people, SUVs have replaced the wagon. The few wagons left available in the US aren't even called a wagons anymore. The Prius is the v, the Camry one was bulked up and called the Venza, and the Subaru Outback doesn't carry the Legacy name along with dropping the wagon moniker. I think the European brands are the only ones not ashamed of the wagon description.

Then many want AWD for whatever reason, and many of the actual wagons we get do offer it.
