I believe the manual is fairly clear about this. I don't have that book in front of me, but my recollection is that you should take greater care ("easy" use) for the first 600 miles. Please check your manual, though, to be certain. It also will give you a better idea of what "easy" really means.

Yeah, don't go drag-racing or anything for the first little while. And don't let your boyfriend drive it if he's gonna "test its limits." The car does have limits worthy of testing, but right out of the factory is not the time for that!

My wife drives my Prius more than I do, and she always kills the MPG avg... another big reason not to let anyone drive your Prius! :)

Prius was my first car too, but the car made the buying decision easy.

Thanks. The manual is very specific... what a thought!

    Hijacking? Are you kidding?! haha!
Please, I posted this thread so that we can all share in the joy of he feeling: "Oh my gosh! I finally am a Prius owner!"

    CONGRATS!!! The package 6 rocks!!
I say, "Go BIG, or go home!"

Its awesome seeing so many other Priuses (Prii?) on the road!
I'm not only a week in, and loving it!
Just hit 200 miles... my baby is growing up!

Drove around looking at Christmas lights (again) tonight.
I feel much better doing it, knowing that I am not using nearly as much gas & not putting out as much crap into our air!

Wahoo! Coudn't wait to fill up to check my actual mileage so I topped it off at 342 miles on the ODO. Took all of 6.22 gallons or 54.98 MPG!

And it isn't even broke in!!!

And best of all, there is room enough to carry a couple RC planes (see attachments).

    :):)

    AWESOME!
I'll be filling up on gas for the first time in a few days... looking forward to it, too.
Kinda funny, though... never have I looked forward to filling up!
I drove to work yesterday, and cranked up the stereo... no one ever really talks about the awesome sound!
I'm sure there is better out there, but....
I was rockin' out! Way to go JBL.
I still haven't figured out what to call the Nav Lady... I've been reading posts, but nothing sticks.

It feels good not to be the only new smiling new Prius owner around here.
We just got our Driftwood Pearl on Dec 6th.
So far it is the only one I have seen around the city where we live.
The norm seems to be a big 4x4 truck no matter you do.

The first tank wasn't that good, only 420 km....second is half way at ~260 km. I know the weather plays a big role (never more than -5C these days) but....

Okay... so I filled up for the first time.

I could have sworn that I should have gotten more then 360 miles out of a tank...? I was down to one bar. (I filled up 8.8 gallons)
If I calcuated correctly, I actually only got 40 miles per gallon....
According to the car, I got an average of 42.8 for the entire tank.
    Whats the deal?

Regaurdless, I still love the car. Its a dream to drive!

Looking forward to my rear bumper protector & my BT stiffening plate... scheduled to arrive after the first of the year.

Have you read all the threads about getting the most from your Prius? A couple of good driving habits can make all the difference as can keeping tyres around the 42PSI F/40PSI R. Have a read and have a go.
Congrats on the new blue wheels!!

    Re: only 42.8 mpg

Try a new pair of sneakers. It could be due to lead feet :)

I got 54.98 when I topped off at 342 miles with still just under half a tank left.

Use the pulse and glide method or even the cruise control, and increase the PSI in your tires. Hopefully you will see an improvement.

I live in slowpoke county, so I have already accustomed myself to driving slower than the old agressive self I once used to be.

I used to drive like the road was a racetrack when I lived in the city, till I learned that over a 30 minute commute, it just didn't make a hill of beans difference whether or not I drove conservatively or hell bent for election, the time savings could only be measured in a couple of minutes at most.

Now, I just set the cruise control to the posted speed limit and sit back and enjoy the ride. It does somewhat unnerve me to have people ride my bumper, so I try to give those people who drive like I used to plenty of room or opportunities to pass, even if it means pulling over to let them get by. It is so funny though because I usually end up pulling up behind them again at the next red light.

    Re: only 42.8 mpg

So, should we go with the posted tire pressure or increase it?

I am currently using my third gas tank. I am at 6.0 L/100 km (~40 MPG).
As BellaRose said, I love my Prius and I think I can do better.
One thing for me to keep in mind is the ambient temperature, these days (and for few more months) is around -10C.

    Re: only 42.8 mpg

Check the forum for more posts on this subject, but it seems that increasing tire pressure helps. I am running 41/42 front/rear.

Cold weather decreases your mileage as well. It seems that those who live in cold climates recommend intalling an EBH (Engine Block Heater).

I am in Florida, so I don't have those issues and am getting around 55 MPG. I use the cruise control frequently and rarely ever go above 55 mph in my travels. Most of my driving is probably in the 45 mph range.

The first 5 minutes always seem to incur the worst mileage. Most of my trips are 30 minute runs.

I have read posts here of people getting much higher MPG. Having only had my Prius a couple of weeks, I too am still learning how to get the most out of my ride.
