Official 2020 Toyota Prius Prime oil-change instructions

    There are a lot of incorrect statements there, but, yes, SAE 0W-16 is the right choice unless you drive hard for extended periods.

    there are new terms of use for techstream subs. So if your using legit, it could be in your best interest to read it again.

    About the MyPrius titles in techstream, it's a general type TITLE. The manuals are not always exactly correct every time. If you purchase a subscription it becomes clear what gets the updates quickest.
    Oil filter is probably not high on the update the manual list. Check out how many manuals and how many updates each manual gets - per model - per trim - per year. Using your fingers to count?

    Try hand-tightening it to 3/4 turns next time and see if you can do it without an effort and how the removal will feel after the OCI. Use gloves or a rag.

    Been doing that ever since I had to use a screwdriver through the filter to remove a spin on. No more filter wrench needed with spin ons. Though I still use the filter wrench on the element, I only tighten it hand tight or until I reach the spring clip on the housing.
    or drain before removing the filter, if doing an oil and filter change.

    The oil required is stamped on the oil filler cap. I don't think that is a recommendation but a requirement.

    after the two year free maintenance coverage ended (3 oil changes 0w20, 6.5k, 8.3k, 10.2), I paid for the 0w16 at 13k.

    I just think it's funny that done folks will argue about whether 3/4 turn vs 7/8 turn us "right"...

    if you're actually doing your own oil changes, you're already miles ahead of most people that wait until an idiot light comes on, then drive another 50-5,000 miles depending on their mood. ;-)

    the spin in filters aren't anything new. for that matter, neither are the cartridges. what is new, is the availability of lots of people to argue about how far to turn, which viscosity, which brand of torque wrench, and which air to put in the tires...

    hehe, my 06 is already almost 600 miles over and the wrench light on the dash is now lite. It also has a horribly weak hybrid pack that could / should be switched out with another stronger pack, but I don't want to put the stronger weak pack in again during the winter. Thanks God I don't need the car as a daily or even weekly driver. As I learn how I can muddle by with conditions I have to eventually address. As I was reading above, I was thinking, man I need to get under that thing and change the oil, today. Then I remembered I have body work to do on the 2017 Prime for the misses. Heavens help would be nice about now.
    edit: the even older 02 needs tranny work, swap out, maybe next year though, if eva. Other option is part out, but my sales skills suck big time.

    I'd appreciate advice on oil type and oil change schedule for my 2017 Prius Prime that rarely runs on gas. Thanks to COVID I've recently completed 6+ months and 3,000 miles on 8 gallons of gas. Doing the math @ 65 mpg I had about 500 miles of gasoline operation. I would go several weeks without a gas engine start. I didn't set out to do so, but I did more business online and local and less at distance. Should I change to a different oil? Does the oil break down from non-use or do the rings have surface problems without operation? Are there operational gas powered events I should schedule? Should I do something to keep my 12 volt battery charged?

    Congratulations on all the right questions.
    If your not actively charging the traction battery; say weekly - you should probably install a battery tender or pick one day a month to charge the 12VDC battery @ 2+amps for about 4 hours. That should get your battery back above 12.5 - 12.75 VDC. I'm pretty sure you have a wet cell battery; so check your electrolyte levels every fall - top off with distilled water if necessary.
    Toyota manual states annual oil changes, if you don't meet the other deadlines for an oil change. IMHO, I would run the engine every two or three weeks; long enough to burn all the moisture out of the oil. That means switching the motor on; in HV mode and going for a 20+ mile drive. This ensures the motor components gets a workout (lube) and parts don't start corroding. I would also push my oil change intervals out to 18 - 24 months. Stick with the OEM recommended oil weight for your car - your already saving money on extended oil change intervals.
    The other major drive train component that's always taking a beating is your transmission. Do a search on ATF change. IMHO, the first ATF change should be around 15K - 20K miles then every 60k - 80K thereafter; It's cheap insurance. These transmissions aren't know for failing; but if it does it's a $4K+ repair or replacement. I prefer to spend $100 every 80K; closer to $25, if you do it yourself.

    I 2nd the battery tender recommendation. I use my Prime 98% electric these days. I recharge and fully deplete the traction battery once daily Monday thru Friday. And put the 12v battery on a tender Saturday and Sunday. We'll see if that has any effect on the typical 4 year lifespan on the 12v battery. Oil Changes twice yearly if I don't meet deadlines. That's overboard but it makes me happy.
