Regarding movies and EV's: Literally last night I finally watched "Who Killed the Electric Car?" for the first time. I'd seen "Revenge of the Electric Car" year ago, but not the first one. Was so fascinating watching that with the knowledge of what 15 more years have brought us. And even more impressive what Tesla has done considering. In only about 11 years after when people thought electric cars were gone, Tesla brought us the first truly mass market EV. Even though they aren't cheap up front, many examples have shown us they can be as cheap as an Accord or Camry factoring in TCO, and likely a lot cheaper when you factor in resale.

The irony is crushing the EV1s inspired the Tesla team to go after a market GM abandoned.

Source: Tesla cuts Model Y price by $3,000 as wide-scale efficiencies get realized

By GenePosted on July 11, 2020
Tesla has reduced the price of its Model Y crossover by $3,000 in North America. The price reduction comes roughly three months after the company began delivering its first production Model Y cars to customers in March, and one month after the company cut prices across its entire Model S, Model X, and Model 3 lineup.

Tesla Model Y Long Range is now listed at a base price of $49,990, a $3,000 savings from the previous $52,990 pricing. Model Y Performance also saw a price reduction of $1,000, from $60,990 to, now, $59,990.
    . . .

Now Tesla has mastered manufacturing that they can reduce the price of new models. This really hurts traditional manufacturers who have yet to figure out EV manufacturing efficiencies. Their EV development money is evaporating.

Tesla is an exciting company - great innovation -ability to bring a concept to fruition and if that wasn't enough they are an American company we as Americans can feel proud of.

They also have some severe quality issues and need to correct them to bring themselves up to Common Automotive Manufacturing standards.

There is no "one" Automotive Manufacturing Company that is or has a singular "answer".

The key for us consumers and the Automotive Industry is competition and more competition, where the industry drives the Industry to deliver more value to the customer.

It is not wise for a consumer to lock themselves to a brand or manufacture and tout them as "the answer or the best".

Demand the Industry provide the best quality and value for the dollar and let your money follow the best product -that way others will have to match to capture their share of the market.

There is not a single individual Automotive Manufacture that is providing the "answer or product" for everyone. There is a wonderful mix and selection right now that an educated consumer with an open mind can shop and find their best version of a product for themselves.

I my mind it is a shame for a consumer to paint themselves into a corner where they limit their own choices by stereotypes and preconceived notions. It is a no win situation where the consumer themselves lose and the Industry is hurt because the individual is not making the best choice base on value.

Also what makes life exciting is everyones situation will drive their choice of a best vehicle- there is no one size fits all.

The EV and PHEV markets are finally getting some very exciting competitors that will give us many more choices.

Apologize for shooting my mouth off!

OPERATIONAL SCENARIO - the Tesla reflect the bare minimalist cabin switches and controls. There are no HVAC physical switches, audio controls, a single video display, or mode switches. In contrast, traditional automakers have multiple switches, audio controls, multiple displays, and mode switches. Each switch requires at least one or more wires making the wiring harnesses more complex. So potential buyers can choose between an austere cabin or one chock full of buttons and knobs with massive wiring bundles and connectors. Some people prefer a switch and display busy cabin while Tesla buyers are minimalists who don't need the extra parts count. A missing part can not fail.

QUALITY - early manufacturing vehicles are well known to have problems as Consumer Reports correctly identifies. However, a pioneer in 'over the air updates' (OTA), Tesla corrected a latent defect in the Model 3 brake controller without having to return the car to a service center. In contrast, the honorable competition required vehicles to go to a service center and waste half a day for their updates. For example, our 2010 Prius had a latent defect, a brake pause. It was a software update fixed only by returning the car to the local dealer. Quality is not just the existence of a defect but in correcting safety critical car functions like braking, Tesla has demonstrated an edge.

EFFICIENCY - a list of 25, top efficiency, electric powered vehicle in 2020 has:
    • 13 - Tesla models
    • 2 - Hyundai models
    • 1 - Chevy model
    • 2 - Kia
    • 3 - BMW
    • 1 - VW
    • 2 - Nissan
By diversity of models, Tesla provides EVs choices that appeal to a broader range of buyers. The Tesla EVs dominate the most efficient range with substantially more efficiency in kWh/mile than their competition.

We agree that competition is good and Tesla brings an aggressive new player. Traditional car makers all but copy each other, primarily in the cabin but also legacy practices. In contrast Tesla provides simplicity, quality safety systems, and exceptional efficiency. Pick what appeals to your pocket book.
