i find it mildly hilarious the honda civic hybrid gets the same fuel economy.

Lets see... Honda CR-x. 50+ mpg

But according to consumer reports, the smart fortwo gets better mileage.
The golf TDI is right there, only 2 mpg less.

    Most fuel-efficient cars

there's a whole list for ya. For a dedicated hybrid, the insight is nothing when compared to a prius.

    (1) not an example to your claim, as the Civic Hybrid is not a non-hybrid.

    (2) Hilarious? I expect the Civic's full IMA to get better fuel economy than the Insight-II's reduced-budget IMA.
Let's see. Fuel Economy shows 43 mpg, for the CRX-HF-SIL and VX-SIL versions only. Lose any of those initials and they fall below the Insight. The series ended ~15 years ago. It is underweight and too unsafe and dirty to be marketed today, so it is not a current choice.
I find EPA mpg more meaningful than CU mpg. According to Fuel Economy, Smart doesn't match the Insight.
'2 mpg less' is less than a match.
    List dismissed.

I'm not into fratricide. Insight may be not be a match for Prius, but I want to see more hybrids of many strips out on the road replacing guzzlers.
