The valve and cooler are roughly $250 apiece. Of the two, the valve cleaning is relatively trivial and quick, something a pro mechanic might stoop to do.

Otherwise, $500 for parts and maybe $500 labour??

It is too bad that Toyota and the dealerships have this head-in-the-sand attitude on the EGR issue.

You can go on ebay, or just do a junkyard search and find a used egr cooler for under $100.
I got mine for $50. You can do the same for the egr valve. Not sure if I would get a used one,
unless I KNEW it was good.

    Get a friend.
    Start a meetup.
Begin with something easy, like a coolant change, and work your way up gradually.

You don’t think I went to the store and bought this entire rolling chest of tools in one weekend, do you? There are Craftsman starter sets which come in cases for about $150-$200 which are excellent for getting started.

Yesh*, I think I remember that jack. Did @Rebound have a thread about it??

    * Meant to type "yes", it came out "yesh", Priuschat didn't spell correct, I figure play it where it lays.

"Yesh" is an authorized variant for yes (OED), if speaking after a three martini lunch...

Well I went ahead and purchased the parts off Amazon. A buddy of mine who is a little more mechanically inclined than me is going to double team this project with me once the parts arrive and we have the same days off from work.

Was trying to do "invalid mode" today, for brake fluid change. Four, five times: not getting lucky. Watched the video commencement several times, and finally caught on, the first step: put on the parking brake!

    Thanks again @NutzAboutBolts ! (y)

Yeah whole car was raised, wheels off, on jackstands. As usual I'd released the parking brake before starting to lift the front (and chocked the rear wheels). I figure it's easier on the rear brakes if the rear wheels are free to rotate as you raise the front, like a hinge. OCD maybe, and it backfired this time, lol.

Nifty! I just pulled the top part off and was able to reach in to replace mine.
Either way, that's an easy job! I do surprise people when they hear horns from a large car,
and then see the Prius! :)

I tried doing that, it was a little tight to view, but I can see using a wrench would work too.

Shortly after posting I realized you went further so that you'd be able to video what you were doing.
It would have been extremely difficult to be able to get any decent video with the bumper cover in the way. :)

I just did the same job on my Prime. Piece of cake. I almost decided to make a video, but it would have been a lot more work and I was in a bit of a hurry. As with the Gen 3, it was only necessary to remove the top plastic cover and not the bumper, but removing the bumper would make it much easier to video.
