Re: Now THAT's an airplane, part deux That was a hellacious incident. The crew tried to save the aircraft - to no avail. It's reminiscent of the Alaska 261 MD80 with the ungreased jackscrew in the tail. Very sad events.
Re: Now THAT's an airplane, part deux IMHO both events were CRIMINAL. The doomed JAL123 was a botched repair job performed by none other than Boeing itself. Once the truth came out, a maintenance manager with JAL committed suicide The Alaska Airlines crash was also criminal, in that Alaska Airlines tried to save a few bucks worth of grease. As a result, the Acme nut and thread stripped out, and it then became impossible to control the aircraft I should caution that some of these investigative comments and re-enactments may be disturbing.
