Both PiPs are 195/65/15. What is on your 2010? My 2006 has 185/65/15. The lug pattern should be the same for all.

I have mounted snow tires. When I leave town I will throw one of them in the cargo area along with the suitcases. I also have a jack and lug wrench.

Well, all this got me curious, so I weighed the donut spare and jack, lug wrench and handle from my 2006 Prius with a totally uncalibrated luggage scale.

    Donut spare - 23.8 lbs
    jack, handle,
    wrench - 7.4 lbs

This would all fit behind the rear seat on the cargo floor.

It seems an enterprising woodworker could come up with a wooden box with some matching carpet that would fit snugly behind the rear seats on the cargo shelf that would accomodate a spare and jack for those times a spare would want to be carried along.

I think my Australian Shepherds wouldn't mind the extra height of the jump in and out.

LOL, they really flew apart from exceeding speed? I know tires are rated to speed, but damn I expected a buffer on that!

No spare is annoying but an increasing number of cars have this. Spares just take up a lot of room! I go years between punctures to be honest.

Actually, not to be a naysayer of negativity but hopefully as helpful information, I know of two young ladies who were killed because the tire blew out while they were traveling at a high rate of speed. I have never been able to find out the exact speed, and it wasn't in a Prius, but I have always suspected that the tires weren't rated for the speed they were traveling.

And yes, I too would have suspected a "buffer" of safety above the rated speed, but now I would not. So I would just hope that people who want to travel at those speeds check their tire speed rating, and also have the tires inflated properly.

Now I'm wondering if the PiP will come with a jack, and apologies if this has been asked and answered elsewhere. It is one thing to not have a spare, but to not have a proper jack for the car would be upsetting.

The prototype PiP has a jack.

Mine doesn't have a spare. Only a jack, wrench (why), an air pump and a bit of white fluid goo. There is roadside assist if I do destroy my tyres beyond repair. Plus I might find some Subaru space saver spare tyre and put it in just in case.

Wow, 80mph is the speed limit on some highways in west Texas.

Surprising that any passenger car tires would carry such a low speed rating. I have my doubts that is so.

There are maximum and minimum speed limits. 80 may be the max. Min is likely 45.

Point is, except for the emergency spare, I don't think normal passenger cars are rated at a maximum of only 80 mph.

    ___________

And for the poster wondering about hanging a spare on the back of the car, I just checked the Toyota website; they're now offering a Continental Kit.

Pinto Girl, I love your continental kit on the back of the Prius. I wonder what it does to the mpg?

From "2012 Prius Plug-in Hybrid Product Information" sheet, "Spare Tire/Wheel- Tire repair kit"
From the 2006 Owner's Manual, "Do not use liquid sealants for a flat tire as the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter will be damaged."
So do you suppose that Toyota has come up with a new formula for the sealant, or new TPMS valves, or what?
I like the idea of finding a temporary spare to carry, along with a jack if one doesn't come with the car. And I would most likely carry it all the time. You can have flat anywhere, anytime, not just on long trips.

Are there any small donut tires available for the PIP size tire?

This is the warning from page 166 in the 2003 prius owners manual:

Do not drive in excess of the speed
limit. Even if the legal speed limit
permits it, do not drive over 140
km/h (85 mph) unless your vehicle
    has high–speed capability tires.
    Driving over 140 km/h (85 mph)
may result in tire failure, loss of
control and possible injury. Be sure
to consult a tire dealer to determine
whether the tires on your vehicle
    are high–speed capability tires or
not before driving at such speeds
