No spare tire and a blow out in 2017 Prime

Prime trunk space is already at the minimum, putting in there a spare donught tyre would be a deal breaker for most of the potential buyers... furthermore, changing tyres can be dangerous

The couple of flats I've had, the first was a slow leak, and I was able to repair it while the wheel was off the car, swapped for snow tires (mounted on separate rims). The second, luckily we'd just pulled into a parking spot at a Costco (with aforementioned snow tires, not tpms sensors), and after getting out I noticed the left rear corner was near-flat.

I especially like the second scenario in the video, the guy with the safety vest, traffic cones and so on. Best laid plans, lol.

 

WOW! Just watched the video. They are very graphic. Is it supposed to be funny? It is supposed to be a commercial for runflat tires, but for two times I had flats on my car that had runflat tires on, they would not run after flat. I had to call AAA for both times.

 

No, just typical marketing scare-mongering. Create FUD to help sell your product.

 

It kinda backfires then, for me. I watch it and think I'll carry on, but cognizant of the dangers. No yoinking on the tire on an overpass, and don't let go of the lug nuts, lol.

 

And most important don't change a tire while wearing stiletto heels!

I agree though, the video title is correct, changing tires CAN be dangerous, it just depends on the situation. Good lighting, dry conditions, safe location, should be okay. But it always deserves first sizing up the situation and deciding if it's safe. If not, make a phone call.

 

Less than 6 months old. 2,350 miles on my new 2021 Prius Prime and a blows out on rear driver side tire. No warning lights that tire pressure was low. The wheel was on the road and the tire was in shreds somewhere in there freeway. Luckily I bought a spare that I had at home which I purchased for my 2017 Prius before I took off to Alaska. I have AAA but they'd have to tow me. Good thing I have a brother who lives across the street from me who was home and could bring my spare for replacement. Not feeling confident about these factory tires. Went to less Schwab and bought another tire which I'm keeping on my backseat floor just in case! I'm taking advice from one of you and filing a complaint.

 

The only thing that’ll make Toyota see sense is to not buy a car without a spare. Until that happens in droves, they’ll continue as is.

 

Alternatives:

• I've had good results with Tire Sealant - flat tire prevention for Cars | Ride-On Tire Protection Ride-On tire sealant. It'll seal a small puncture, and it isn't a bother to clean the inside to patch the tire. It is a bother to install.
  
• I bought Bridgestone DriveGuard run-flat tires. They're working well for us. They'll run without air for 50 miles at 50 mph (then they're junk). These are very acceptable, much better I'm told than the older type run-flat tires.

 

sad Pac-Man is no substitute for a spare tire

 

I have had two flats in the last few years:

1. The first was a blowout of a sidewall (The OE Prius tires are not strong tires and do not have a road hazard warranty) and sealant would have been useless.
2. The second was a screw in the edge of the tread. I was able to pump up the tire and get to a garage to get it patched so the sealant was not required. The tire was declared dangerous and I got a free replacement under the tire manufacturer's (Nokian) road hazard warranty.

Run-Flat tires are a terrible idea:

1. A simple flat will require replacing the tire if you drive on it.
2. They have a premium price
3. They will cost you about 10% in MPG. (Remind me, why did you buy a Prius Prime?)

mine has Dunlap. Also I run 42 psi. Sometimes 40.
