If the range is 100 Miles, can be charged at home for less than 4 hours and < US $30K.

A lot of people will buy this car for their daily commute (of course higher range is better).

    "It won't be mainstream"

A lot of hub bub here ... regarding that concept ... as though mainstream is the deal-breaker. Consider that all "things" were previously not mainstream ... whether it be a Model T, to a Home PC. In the past, we had to do stuff another way because IT was easiest. Our 'instant' society is uncomfortably squeamish about change in the way we do things, when we're happy with the 'old' way. My Great Grandfather never thought cars would catch on. My father in law (an electrical engineer) never thought home PC's would catch on. Somehow, we found a way to make the new stuff mainstream ... just as the Prius/hybrid technology is now more & more main stream.

Great points. Who killed the electric car? Maybe it was some of these bloggers that beat up everything that's not mainstream enough! ;-)

If 100 miles is the current range to keep it affordable for guys like me, I'd say more power to Nissan! The Prius needs some more competition seeing as the Insight is a flop.

I'm looking forward to my drives to SF, LA, and San Diego...for free! :)

Local News | Governors envision eco-friendly fuels at I-5 rest stops | Seattle Times Newspaper
"Gov. Chris Gregoire and her counterparts in Oregon and California are considering a plan they hope would help transform Interstate 5 from a freeway ruled by gasoline burners to a haven for eco-friendly cars and trucks.

The three governors envision a series of alternative fueling stations stretching from the Canadian border to Mexico, creating what has been dubbed a "green freeway."

As the plan stands, motorists eventually would be able to pull off at I-5 rest stops for more than a cup of coffee and roadside relief: They also would be able to charge, or swap out, their electric-vehicle batteries or fill their tanks with biodiesel, ethanol, hydrogen or compressed natural gas."

I've been hitting this page: Electric Cars from Nissan - Nissan USA and so far nothing. By the time you read this, it'll probably be something.

    Socket to me, baby!

Nissan's Leaf is really setting the branch... er, bar very high.

    This is very encouraging.

I can't wait to see what Mitsubishi, et al's counter moves are.

Pricing details will be announced closer to start of sales in late 2010; however, the company expects the car to be competitively priced in the range of a well-equipped C-segment vehicle.

What's a C-segment vehicle...and damn, 2010!! That is very exciting news. A fine looking car, seats 5 adults and beating the Volt and Model S to the market from an established manufacturer...this will succeed!

In my opinion, calling it "Leaf" is rather - in a word - gay.

I really like this interior. It's very clean and looks very easy to use. I just hope that "e" with "zero emissions" isn't constant.

Is it just me or does the battery on the left side look like it's flipping you off?

It looks like some sort of RPM replacement. I like how it tells you exactly how many miles you have remaining. I don't know if they were "hypermiling," but 85+132 = 217 km, way above the 160 km limit!! :)

If you go to the site and hover on the [Others] button, there's a timer marked "Next Update." It's counting down to approximately August 6th at 10:40am CST

Found the one I wanted, pressed the [Print Screen] button and copied into MS Paint. Resized the image as a crop and saved as JPG.

    Sure it's low-tech but it works. :D
