Toyota's PHV which is in "limited production" now uses a Lithium Ion pack developed by the same people who make it's NiMh packs; Panansonic EV Energy systems. (Toyota is a partial owner)

As many have already said; I doubt they will change standard Gen III production over to the new Lithium technology until Gen IV, but they could. Toyota is very careful with new technology, and they prefer to introduce it in a slow controlled fashion to insure proper reliability and performance.

That's really interesting, this is giving me more hope for the future of hybrid and electric cars because they all seem to be going full Lithium-Ion.

I just got a 2010 prius and I'm going to keep it as long as possible, it may last another 10 years. I didn't want anything that contained Lithium-Ion battery because from what I see everywhere it will not last more than 8 years. But seeing that the Prius Plug-in still has the NIMH, it is reassuring.

There isn't any Lithium-Ion device that prevent deep-discharges like the plug-in Prius. So, what you've read doesn't directly apply. Having an engine to help maintain the battery really does make a difference.

Also, the plug-in Prius does use Lithium-Ion. Remember that older posts refer to the pre-production model, not what Toyota ended up rolling out.

If that is true, Toyota has to replace battery for every PIP during the warranty period. I do wish they replace mine close at warranty expiration. I believe they will have better battery in 10 years.
