I wonder how much battery power you'd use up driving a reel-to-reel player in the Prius? :D

Depends on whether you use the 15" or 17" Reels... They claim to have a slight mpg reduction on the 17"s... :D

    Hi TKY,

I think that the point of this discussion is not that XM is charging royalty fees. (So far, everybody on this thread seems to be in agreement that musical artist should be compensated for their art.) The point of this debate is that royalty fees are an integral part of the XM business model and should be included in their base pricing rather than having it as an extra surcharge.

8-Tracks? All of mine destroyed themselves in the last century.

Still nothing to get worked up over. In fact I prefer an itemized billing. I once got a lump sum hospital bill for $53,000. I asked for an itemized listing and after several meetings ended up removing over $20,000 in services I did not receive. Sorry but I just do not see any downside to them listing how the money I send them is allocated.

At the time the pricing was set, they didn't have to include extra costs for the royalty fee. This new fee has been imposed on them by congress. It's like a sudden new tax. I don't think they are wrong in passing it along to the consumer.

I don't know, guys. I'm on a Rhapsody To Go trial right now and I'm feeling the love. I still want my travelling news stations but if you just want music then there are better options than XM.

I understand the issue is how XM is charging for their service. I have no idea what XM's business model includes or excludes and there is a certain refreshing aspect of XM itemizing the royalty fee in light of the public display of copyright infringement issues the past couple of years.

I do not discourage those who want to subscribe to XM, from doing so. It just doesn't make sense for me.

On the other hand, I might like Jay_Man2's idea. Anyone know where I can get a 4-channel reel-to-reel tape player? --TK

I understand McDonalds and Burger King are going to this pricing scheme too. The base price of the burger is $0.75 then there is a bun surcharge and pickle acquisition fee. YADA YADA YADA. XM... give us one price like you oughta!!!

Pandora is a free APP. Just stream it on 3G. No need to jailbreak. There are quite a few other ones too. If you don't have an iPhone you can use most any smart phone to stream (Android platform, Sprint's PRE, a number of Verizon phones too. Funny how I trash XM but I still listen to it. FREE is good.

IF one likes XM or S, then $77 is not bad. I cannot find anyone to give me that price on my second radio. I already purchased a 3 year XM sub with online access for my CRV for $349 (no royalty fee 1.7 years ago). It was about $110 for a year so I opted for one month to start. So I decided I am going to let the trial period die out on the Prius and I purchased a Pioneer XMP3 (which lets me listen or record anywhere) for $150 at Best Buy last week which includes car and home kit. I love it since I only listen to talk radio and just tape away for listening while I am at the gym or travelling for work. Never have to sit bored in an airport again (only can carry so many books). Perhaps because my office is in a room with dormer windows, that face south, I get excellent reception. Have not tried the car kit yet. Once the CRV sub expires, which probably stick to portable. Now I need to tell XM to "find" the $77 subscription!

If I wanted to simply add the "Best of Sirius" selection to my trial subscription, is that possible?
All I'm really interested in adding is the Howard Stern channels.
I can't simply add those only, right?

i just called them and the $77 is an "unadvertised" price. i asked about the LT sub and it was $399 for the extra package with Stern, et al. but as i was seesawing the rep did offer to "lock" the $77 price.

    so it is still available

When I called to cancel the service in my trade-in I was able to add the Best of Sirius to the trial.

Got it up and going in about 20 minutes, including the phone call.
I was having problems with the webpage, so I just called them.

$4 a month, but I'm a big Howard Stern fan... so that doesn't bother me.
Not sure if I will renew the subscription in 3 months when it expires...

Urban Redneck here - nice to have NASCAR back on XM with the Best of Sirius package. NFL is great too. :p
