As you get used to driving a hybrid, the milage will get better. I used to rent a Gen II Prius long time ago, and at first I has similar milage, but then learned about driving more gentle, yet still keeping flow of traffic, and allowing enough time to gently brake...and then I achieved about 48 miles per gallon. As for my 2013 Prius four, I'm averaging about 52 in mixed driving in a hilly area. We have a Dodge Caravan at work, and just for fun, I drive it the same ay I drive the Prius, and I can get much better milage on it too.
